The bottom line is that, as a label, the U.K.'s Charly usually gets it right and tight. That is certainly the case with this 23-cut Meters compilation. On a single disc they manage to cram virtually every major track by the band into one place for a decent price. There are some wonderful surprises, too. While the one notable omission is the amazing version of Jimmy Webb's "Wichita Lineman" that the band does, the easy and breezy soul of "Sophisticated Cissy" is included, along with "Cissy Strut." Art Neville's amazing soul tune "Heartache" is also on this set. Those are singled out because you know what the rest is: Meters-style New Orleans funk, played with shock-tight rhythms and all the grooves a listener might ever want. This is a fantastic introduction to one of the greatest musical units to come out of New Orleans ever.
