Notes:
The 2nd earliest known recorded concert of the band's career, (the 1st being their performance in Spokane, Washington, (12-30-68) ).
The band were on their very first U.S tour, and were scheduled to play 4 performances at the legendary Whisky A Go-Go, this show is the very last concert of the stint.
The band were billed as "Led Zeppelin, featuring: Jimmy Page formerly of The Yardbirds", they shared the bill with Alice Cooper, Zeppelin being the opening act for the evening.
The group were apparently supposed to play 2 sets that night, but Jimmy was aparently feeling ill that night, so the group shortened the set to only one performance.
This is a period of time in the bands career that Zeppelin fans wish they could've experienced, a time when the group were young, hungry, and just starting out.
They're trying to find their sound, and fleshing out their setlist for the crowds, a time when it was all trial and error for them.
In regards to their performance, this show is a hot one.
They're keeping songs short and tight (with minimum improvisation), but they're playing with real intensity and passion.
Unfortunately, the crowd at this show sounds very unimpressed and subdued, it almost feels like they're playing to a small room, or a club that can't hold more than a couple dozen people, and not a venue like the Whisky.
I know that this performance is an early one of their career, and they're just starting out, but the band are playing their asses off at this show, and the audience sounds like they just don't seem to care.
This tape is very simular to their performance at the Fillmore West on January, 11th, 1969, not just because the intensity of this show is equal to that one, but also because if you listen closely, you can hear traces of another concert in the quiet passages of the show.
The taper must've taped something else before taping this show, and the faint traces of whatever was on the tape before he taped Zeppelin's set can still be heard faintly.
What we've done to make this project:
- We've reduced the volume of the raw recording a bit, the raw tape was originally running too hot, so we've brought the volume down to a more reasonable level.
- We've tried to balance the instruments as best we could, originally the guitar, and drums were a little more up front in the mix than the bass and vocals were, so we've tried to balance the sound as best we could.
- We've tried to reduce as much tape hiss as possible.
This is part 1 of a 2 part series, the 2nd part is a remaster of the band's performance at The Boston Tea Party on January, 23rd, 1969, it will be posted on a later date.
We originally wanted to combine both remasters together in the same folder, but because of recent changes to Dime uploading regulations/policies about combining 2 different performances in the same torrent, the project has been split up into 2 parts.
That's why the project is called "Whisky And Tea", it was supposed to consist of a remaster of the show at The Whisky, and a remaster of the show at The Boston Tea Party.
