Patton really was there at the beginning. While the Revenant box set was an admirable and in fact totally unprecedented devotional exercise as part of John fahey's last will and testament, it did perhaps succeed too well. By this i mean, the tracks became almost subservient to the opulence of the packaging. On this exceedingly modest italian issue, Patton's just allowed to do his thing - this guy was playing guitar behind his head fifty years before Hendrix. Listen to the opiated 'Spoonful Blues' for one of my favourite tunes of all time, fear for the later Charley - having your throat slit by a jealous boyfriend is never going to be tidy business and above all enjoy the primal surge and mercurial talent of one of the founder members.
