This is the last show of the bands 1973 European tour, and this concert is the very last time the band would perform in Paris.
This performance is another one of those shows that's surprisingly under appreciated and overlooked by other concerts from the Euro 73 tour.
I use the word "surprisingly" because it is quite odd that this show isn't held in as high regard as other performances from this tour because this show can definately hold it's own against other audience recordings from this tour.
In terms of sound quality and performance the 1st tape source of this show sounds simular to Offenburg 73 (and I personally think it's superior to some very popular audience recordings from this tour, like Stockholm, Nuremburg, Berlin, Hamburg, and Essen for example).
What this show has more than anything else is an incredible sense of presence of the venue and atmosphere, you really feel like you're right there with the taper in the audience, picking up every cheer, clap, and commentary from the band and the audience.
This show does have it's share of flaws too:
- The main tape source of this project is a bit incomplete, it's total time length is longer than the secondary tape source (the 1st clocks in at 109 minutes, while the 2nd clocks in at 99 minutes), but the 1st tape source is missing the beginning of "Rock And Roll", the end of "The Rain Song", the beginning of "Dazed And Confused", the end of "Whole Lotta Love", and the final encore "Heartbreaker".
- The taper (or a friend of the taper) screws up the "call and response" section in "Black Dog", which is a shame because that moment of the song is quite
- There are a few moments in the tape that have been cut up/garbeled (beginning of "Rock And Roll") possibly due to the tapers equipment malfunctioning.
- The raw tape source's volume ran quite hot, with some distortion peaks in the channels.
A little history/back story behind this recording:
For those that may not know, there are 2 tape sources of this show in circulation.
What's known as the first tape source (the recording used for this project) is a very good sounding audience recording that clocks in around 109 minutes.
The recording sounds like it was taped fairly close to the stage, like it was taped from the floor under the venues roof so the taper could get a balanced sound capture.
It's the longest of the 2 tape sources, but is far from complete, as I previously stated, the recording is missing the beginning of "Rock And Roll", the end of "The Rain Song", the beginning of "Dazed And Confused", the end of "Whole Lotta Love", and the final encore "Heartbreaker".
What's known as the second tape source is a very poor sounding audience recording that clocks in around 99 minutes.
It's very muddy, hissy, and distorted, but what it lacks in sound quality, the recording makes up for it's short comings in completeness, it has the very beginning of "Rock And Roll", the end of "The Rain Song", the tail end of "Whole Lotta Love", and the final encore "Heartbreaker".
There might be some confusion about which tape source came first, some sources say the "Vive Le Zeppelin" source came first, and others say the poor but more complete tape came first.
Rumour has it that both shows at the Palais Des St.Ouen were recorded to be broadcasted on French radio, but Peter Grant apparently had a change of heart and confiscated the tapes after they were recorded, maybe that show will turn up like the performance at L'olympia did.
Our goals for this project, and what we've done to make this release:
Orignially we had the idea to make a merge + remaster of both tape sources for this show, but that plan kind of fell short when we discovered a few problems with our version of the 2nd tape source recieved in a trade, so we decided to do a straight remaster, and give this recording a complete overhaul and bring out it's sheen to hopefully turn collectors on to it.
What we've done is:
- Balance the instruments as best we can, and bring out instruments that were lost in the mix originally (low end).
- We've brought the volume down to a more reasonable level for everyone, originally it was running too hot, we just hope that it's not running too low now.
- we've tried to bring out even more of the ambience in the recording to give listeners as much of the live experience as possible.
In regards to the title:
The title comes from a plantation made before the band plays "Whole Lotta Love", I speak and understand a little french, and do believe I've got what Plant said to the crowd right, but I might be wrong, and if I am, I apologize.
Plant says to the crowd before going into "Whole Lotta Love", "Je suis très fatigué maintenant", which is "I'm very tired now".
He could've said "Êtes-vous très fatigué maintenant", which is "Are You Very Tired Right Now?" translated into english.
The second expression could be right because after he says it, the crowd responds back "no", but I think it was more of a comment about him being tired, possibly from tour fatigue.
