Notes:
The 2nd performance of a 2 night stint at Southampton Universities "Old Refectory" (also known as "The Old Ref").
Originally, the band were only supposed to play one show at the Ref, but a second performance was added on because of popular demand for tickets.
This is an interesting performance because it's played in a more intimate venue, which is a big change for the band considering the time period because the group were now used to playing and filling stadiums, this show is like they're returning to the clubs (like they did previously in 1971).
This show gets alot of mixed reviews/reactions from Zeppelin collectors.
Some really rave about it because of it's sound quality (it picks up the instruments and commentary on the stage quite nicely, giving you a feeling like you're on the stage with the band) and the bands performance.
Some collectors say that it's one of the better performances from the Winter U.K 73 tour, Plant's voice is on the mend from the flu he was plagued with for the first half of the tour, and the band seemed to have built up some steam and found their groove.
There are a very sloppy moments from the band, but overall this performance is quite "tight but loose".
Other collectors say that it's a good performance, but not their best, and compared to some performances from the European 73 tour, it does pale in comparison to some shows like Vienna, Munich, and Offenburg.
Plant's voice is on the mend from the flu, but he's still having some trouble hitting some of those high notes, and the recording while feeling very intimate on stage, does lack audience presence, feeling more like a band rehearsal than a live show.
I personally really enjoy this performance, and it has some really shining moments (realy beautiful renditions of "Stairway To Heaven" and "Thank You", powerful versions of "Dazed And Confused" and "Heartbreaker", and of course a rare full performance of "How Many More Times", which had been retired by the band for about 2 years).
This show was originally planned to be a live album for the band to document their U.K 73 tour (hence the reason why some boot labels call this show "The Great Lost Live Album"), but for some reason the idea was scrapped.
What we've done to make this project:
- We've tried to balance the instruments as much as possible.
- We've tried to bring out things that were buried in the raw recording (i.e: cheering, clapping, acoustics of the venue) to make this recording sound less like a rehearsal and more like a live show.
- We've tried to fix the channel shifts as best we could.
Hope everyone here will enjoy this.
Cheers
