Total Time ::: 1:07:06
::: Pretty clear, overly bright, some bass distortion, somewhat distant sounding audience tape, fortunately mostly without much audience participation. Quality samples bestowed below to elucidate and/or invigorate!
::: Warts: Bit of (bizarre) talking at the start of the first song, then the taper & his friend "Rick" settle down. I certainly missed a few dropouts but got most of the worst.
::: The new Steve Miller Band here includes 3 ex-members of Frumious Bandersnatch...
::: Bill on 25th & 26th - Steve Miller Band, Mungo Jerry, Clouds. I didn't transfer the 1 Mungo track I have & I don't have the Clouds set.
Recording Information ::: unknown mono recording equipment -> master audience tape -> 1st generation tape -> 2nd generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette, Dolby B on.
Playback 2012-04-04 ::: 2nd generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette on Nakamichi BX-300 cassette deck, Dolby B on, azimuth & pitch adjusted, heads cleaned & demagnatized -> Tascam CD-RW900SL pro CD recorder -> CD-RW -> computer, EAC secure -> wavs -> Audacity (fades &/or glitches, dropouts, volume adjustments, no EQ) -> CD Wave (track splits) -> Trader's Little Helper -> yer ears. Possibly 30 minute tape sides as there are 2 interruptions, both between tracks but both start later afterwards. Seems almost certain the deck had automatic recording levels as every time things get quiet, especially between songs, the volume (and hiss) go up. The brightness is NOT a DOlby incorrectly decoded, but a cheap microphone. Don't let the comments put you off. With a bit of knob fiddling, this is an enjoyable listen. First uploaded week of 2012-06-15.
Line-up ::: Steve Miller - acoustic & electric guitars, vocals, harmonica // Bobby Winkelman - rhythm acoustic & electric guitars, vocals // Ross Lamont Valory ("Dr. Ross") - bass, vocals (& acoustic guitar?) // Jack King ("Jumpin' Jack Flash") - drums, vocals.
Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.
CoolSonics 158 ::: Thanks to the original taper & traders! My copy came from Mike the Dean ::: Corrections welcome ::: People here & over on TD seemed so psyched about the Boston show, I dug this one outta the depths. A week earlier & very similar in many ways, but certainly lesser quality (it needs to be equalised!) & the performance is definitely less inspired & rocked ou than Boston, less of Stevie's stoned majesty... but still something great to listen to. If you turn yer bass up & the treble down a good bit, or do a proper EQ job, this is another treasure from the same era. Very nice that all the dropouts I located were in alternate channels, so they were fixable - not many distractions at all. Is it my imagination or does "Space Cowboy" have some elements of "Hold On I'm Coming" by Sam & Dave". Just idle speculation or a bad hallucination I'm sure. But after all, Stevie says he taught 'em all, so anything is possible. Enjoy the listen & dig the Fillmore vibes.
