I'd like to start off my notes by quoting a eview about the performance from Argenteumastrum.com because I feel he has summed up the performance nicely:
Another one of the really good shows from the 1970 European tour. Robert's voice is amazing as always in 1970 and the band plays some really intense music.
Jimmy's quiet riff intro to Heartbreaker before leading the band in full force is quite dramatic and the not yet recorded Since I've Been Loving You is very passionate and intense.
Dazed And Confused is very compact and played brilliantly, especially by Jimmy, whose playing is fast and fluid in front of the wall of rhythm created by Jones and Bonham.
The How Many More Times medley is great and Robert leads the band through a pastiche of great oldies before closing the show with a great, 1970 pre-medley version of the sole encore Whole Lotta Love.
What makes this recording so exciting it is a only known live rendition to Living Loving Maid. Just right after the last notes of Heartbreaker Plant segued into "With a purple umbrella ..." lyrics but shortly after he said: "I think we're all getting a bit loose!" We know he hated that one so this recording is so exciting for making listening to this song live!
To echo some of the statements that are posted on Argenteumastrum, this show is indeed an excellent performance and recording, it starts out a little rough at the beginning (smoothes out by the time you get to "I Can't Quit You Baby"), and has some brief moments of distortion, but is an overall enjoyable performance.
The recording sounds like it was taped at a slight distance from the stage, but the taped was indeed able to capture all the instruments evenly, with a nice balance.
This recording kind of reminds me of Raleigh, (4-8-70), because both recordings were taped at a distance from the stage, both have a slight echo to them, and a sort of sharpness to the instruments (like the drums). I remember reading in posts about the Raleigh performance that the sharpness in the sound quality is due to the venue having concrete floors, it's possible that the sharpness in the Hamburg tape is also due to the venue having concrete floors as well.
What we've done to make this project:
- We tried to balance the instruments in the recording as best we could. Originally the bass and cymabals were the most dominant instruments on the tape.
- We've tried to reduce some of the distortion that was on the recording as best we could.
- We've tried to bring out some of the acoustics of the venue to try and capture the experience of being there as best we could.
- We've tried to bring out things that were buried in the recording like crowd comments, and cheers.
- We've tried to reduce tape hiss as best we could.
Notes about the title:
For those that may wonder why we chose such an odd, (or what some might consider to be "corny") name like "Hamburger Helper" for the title of our project, I'll try to explain how we came up with the title, and why we stuck with it.
For every Zeppelin project we work on, we always try to come up with a title that somehow references that show.
It could be something to do with the culture of that part of the world, something to do with their history, or sometimes we just use a Plantation from that show.
For this particular performance, we had a bit of trouble coming up with a suitable,and catchy title.
We did research on both German, and Hamburg's history to try and find something we could make reference to, and we did find somethings of interest, like Hamburg was severely bombed during WWII, and the British occupied the city during the war, giving us the idea to call the show "British Occupation", but it didn't really pack the punch we wanted.
We then dug into pop culture references involving Germany, and we found a few things there too, but nothing really panned out there either.
So when those options didn't work, we then tried to see if we could draw influence from something that Plant said during the show, and that turned out to be a bigger source of inspiration then what we found in German history.
Plant makes a couple of great Plantations during this show that we could've used for a title (i.e: "It's Very Naughty To Be Nice"), but there was a plantation during the show that got the ball rolling for the final title choice.
During the show, Plant asks "Is that guy selling Hamburgers?", and that just kind of got the ball rolling on us coming up with "Hamburger Helper".
The great thing about Zeppelin, and the bootlegs is that you can have fun with them, the band never really took themselves too seriously, so you can improvise with things like title names, you just can't do that with other bands (i.e: Pink Floyd), because they take themselves too seriously.
