December 1950 -- July 1951
Out of the ten studio recordings on Hey, Good Lookin' (December 1950 -- July 1951): Vol. VI, no less than six -- "Dear John," "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love With You)," "Howlin' at the Moon," "Hey Good Lookin'," "(I Heard That) Lonesome Whistle," and "Crazy Heart" --were hits, while two of the four remaining cuts ("My Heart Would Know," "I'd Still Want You") were nearly as strong as the well-known songs. The other two, "The Pale Horse and His Rider" and "A Home in Heaven," were duets with Williams' wife, Audrey, and while they were better than most of their collaborations, her voice remains tuneless and painful. The pair of live tracks are engaging, but the undubbed non-session recordings are the real hidden gems; all three songs ("The Angel of Death," "I Can't Escape From You," "Message to My Mother") are haunting and evocative. The remainder of Hey, Good Lookin' is comprised of six Luke the Drifter recordings, and while they are strong (particularly "Ramblin' Man," "A Picture From Life's Other Side," and "I've Been Down That Road Before"), they pale slightly to the rest of the compilation.
