March 1949 - August 1949
With much of the material on I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry (March 1949 -- August 1949): Vol. 4, Hank Williams began to reveal his personal demons through his songs -- "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," "I Just Don't Like This Kind of Living," "You're Gonna Change (Or I'm Gonna Leave)," "A House Without Love," and the initial, non-hit version of "My Son Calls Another Man Daddy" all cut close to the bone. Ironically, his career was riding high at the time, with songs like "Wedding Bells," "You're Gonna Change (Or I'm Gonna Leave)," and "My Bucket's Got a Hole In It" peaking in the upper reaches of the country Top Ten. The aforementioned songs comprise the bulk of the session recordings on I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry and the non-session recordings are just as strong as the official recordings. Most of the overdubbed non-session songs on the compilation are first-rate gospel ("Are You Building a Temple in Heaven," "How Can You Refuse Him Now"), while the undubbed tracks contain such gems as a demo of "Fool About You," "No One Will Ever Know," "If You'll Be a Baby (To Me)," and "We're Getting Closer to the Grave Each Day."
