Mary Ann Kennedy introduces a specially recorded studio session by the Appalachian folk trio Old Sledge
Old Sledge is a hard driving, real-deal hillbilly string band from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, reviving old time country and blues from the turn of the 20th century with a young punk attitude and creativity more reminiscent of indie rock.
Far from being urban imitators of string band music their roots run deep into the heart of the living tradition, this band represents the best players in the new revival of southern mountain music. Blowing the dust off old tunes and songs from the golden era of early country, hillbilly and blues music their performances breathe new life into old obscure tunes, bringing an immediacy to the music instead of just being re-enactors of an antiquated tradition.
