Here's another one in the series "essential in mono but not available on cd".
After many years of legal disputes between the band and their former manager Mattew Katz,
things seemed to have cleared up in 2007 when Sundazed got to do a release program of the
Moby Grape Columbia catalogue.
All albums were re-released on CD with bonustracks and on vinyl (without bonustracks but with
the first album in its rare original mono mix, unlike the CD).
Sadly, it didn't take long before Matthew Katz threatened to sue Sony/Columbia claiming
the artwork of the first three albums belonged to him and was used without permission.
Sony could have gone to court and win this case, but they decided it wasn't worth it
and ordered Sundazed to withdrawn and recall the CD and vinyl versions of the first three
albums, much to Sundazed's and the surviving band members' chagrin.
These titles were only in-print for one month.
This was all the more unfortunate as the first three albums are universally recognised as the band's
high point and then especially the debut, a sublime record that can never get enough appreciation.
So here it is again. In glorious mono. Sounding better than it ever did. Play, play and play again.
This was transferred from an NM copy.
The record is breathtakingly quiet and after a light declick, folding the two mono channels together
and some manual restoration work, I think I've achieved an almost tape like quality.
The record was professionally and carefully cleaned in three steps using Audio Intelligent’s
Enzymantic formula, Super Cleaner Formula, and Ultra pure water on a VPI 16.5
(using VPI brushes) and Nitty Gritty mini-pro 2.
Enjoy!
