when you attend an EELS concert it is always changing, one year it's vocoders and
synthesizers, the next it's gritty garage rock. None of this is designed for the
sake of versatility so much as it is for answering the deep-rooted creative
needs of EELS leader Mark Oliver Everett, aka E.Eels have more than their fair
share of upbeat melodies, but perhaps listeners have become more aware of the
dark, melancholic lyrical themes hiding behind them. That’s certainly the way it
seems, anyway; it’s hard to dance when E is baring his soul without feeling
pangs of guilt, even if his tunes have some of the catchiest hooks,with no less than ten
studio albums out E has a lot of material to draw on.
