The recordings compiled from The United Artists Collection were all out of phase - the master tapes were transferred to digital without the playback azimuth having been aligned with the signal path on the tape. This causes an exaggerated stereo image, with one channel brighter and the other duller. Included with this torrent are spectral images of the phase characteristics of several of the UA tracks before and after correction.
The result of phase correction is improved definition and stereo image, with the recording now sounding closer
to how it did on the machine that recorded it. Most of the tracks on this CD benefitted from this process; of particular note is a marked improvement on "Canadian Railroad Trilogy," which was not only drastically out of phase but also had its channels reversed. Compared to an uncorrected version of this CD, it is now not unlike listening to an "audiophile version."
Additionally, all but two of the tracks presented here played back at A=440 Hz on the CDs from which they were compiled. The rest have been retuned to the keys in which they were originally performed. This may be the first time they have ever been presented in this quality and at the correct speed.
Two tracks, "Talking In Your Sleep" and "You Are What I Am" were remastered from vinyl for inclusion here because they were hits in Canada that were inexplicably not included on any of the major Lightfoot compilations.
