01. --crowd noise & tuning up--
02. Move
03. Dance Dance Dance
04. Beggar's Day
05. You Won't Miss Me
06. One Sided Love
07. I Don't Believe It
08. Gone Dead Train
Total Time ::: 38:10
::: Very fine AUD recording. Check samples for trials & tribulation exhortations.
::: Warts: Not many anymore. Pretty damn steady. Probably missed some dropouts, but I got most of them! Some clapping during last 3 minutes of last song.
::: CONTRAST CLAUSE : This is a remastered version of the original upload (still on the tracker at: http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=382755).
::: Originally taped by Joe Moloney & generously shared with the world from his master by KRW_CO. First DIMED in '07. Now DIMED more than 3 years in total with 2 reseeds, in 2009 & 2011.
::: Opened for J. Geils Band. I checked & it does sound like the J.Geils recording was transfered at the same time & can also be pitched +1.6% for speed correction.
::: Please respect KRW_CO's request not to alter their recordings & upload them without asking them first. They are the source for MANY fine recordings in the world.
::: "Loose", the 2nd Crazy Horse album, had just been released in January of 1972, weeks before this gig.
::: The band is playing on equipment borrowed from J.Geils, due to snowstorm problems.
::: Thanks to Aer from the Rust newsgroup for the time he spent researching & listening. Some liner note corrections came from his posting in 2010.
::: As per Aer's notes on RUST. Whitsell announces 06 as "I Doubt It" (album title is "I Don't Believe It") & 04 as "You Won't Miss Me When I'm Gone" (album title "You Won't Miss Me").
::: Whitsell also makes a couple of jokes about being in Denver, so don't be fooled!
Recording Information ::: unknown equipment -> master stereo analog AUD tape.
Playback (date unknown) ::: master stereo analog AUD tape on unknown equipment -> CDR -> EAC -> FLACs.
Remastering (2011 & 2012) ::: FLACs in Audacity (normalisation to remove DC offset, speed correction, fades &/or glitches, dropouts, volume adjustments, no EQ - detailed notes below) -> CD Wave (track splits) -> Trader's Little Helper -> yr ears. First uploaded week of 2012-12-24.
Remastering details* (done without equalisation):
- lowered levels to work on recording (some spots in raw master transfer were very slightly clipped).
- speed correction applied (original too slow. sped up 1.6% to match album keys/pitch with pitchpipe.
- normalisation to remove dc offset only.
- channel phase correction (offset) correction.
- restored a number of the clipped peaks.
- many pops & clicks & bumps removed, reduced or repaired.
- some clapping near the taper reduced at ends of & between songs.
- volume correction applied in some places - right channel was quite low & levels varied some.
- MANY dropouts & dull spots patched or volume fixed.
- fades added.
- channels balanced after volume corrections.
- retracked, re-FLAC'd.
(* NOTE that this some of this list was done from memory a long time after the fact.)
Line-up (unconfirmed but likely - 1st 3 for sure) ::: Billy Talbot - bass, vocals // Ralph Molina - drums, vocals // George Whitsell - rhythm guitar, vocals // John Blanton - piano, organ, vocals // Greg Leroy - lead & bottleneck guitars, vocals.
Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.
CoolSonics 204 ::: Thanks to the original taper (Joe Moloney) & original uploader (DIMER KRW_CO)! ::: Corrections welcome ::: Here's one for Ptomaine Thomas, a passionate Crazy Horse, Neil Young & Nils Lofgren fan, who turned me onto the first 2 Crazy Horse albums. And this for Brinkhoffs, whose presence has been with me every hour of every day this past week & much more often while I worked on this recording. The world has been a better place with his advice, support & laughter & I'm sure the sorrow will always be a blended with many fond memories - Shine On, indeed - Thank you.
OK. I consider this tape to be quite important, as I'm sure many others do, it apparently being the sole live early Crazy Horse circulating without Neil (what else is there?). Of course it would be the bee's knees to have one from a year or so earlier, first album vintage, but this is the next best thing & I'm quite pleased we have this one. I originally worked on this recording entirely for personal use as KRW_CO have done & are doing a LOT for the taping community & I was happy to honor their request that no "remastering or reposting" be done with their tapes. When I first put the recording on to listen to it, it sounded wrong & quite off-speed to me. It dragged and brought the listening experience down quite a bit (for me). Also, the channels were imbalanced & there were many volume fluctuations & dropouts - the usual challenges. When I pitched the tape (sped it up) & rough fixed the channel balance, it really came to life, so I worked on it & have been quite pleased with the results overall. I didn't use any EQ. I listened to it a number of times, but kept it to myself. I finally decided it was important enough to ask KRW_CO if they would make an exception in this case & let me put out the remaster. The reply was quite positive & I got the go-ahead. I did another meticulous complete run-thru looking for additional dropouts & issues, and here it is. MANY thanks to Joe Moloney for making the original tape & KRW_CO for the original upload & allowing the remaster to happen. While I know people are flooded with great tunes these days, this one is quite a treat & hopefully some folks can get some newfound enjoyment from it.
