The band / performance:
The girls reconvened on their hometown turf to play a free summer concert to a capacity crowd of 2500+ at Downtown L.A.'s smallest park,
Pershing Square. I got off work early, so I came to the park over 2 hours early. In response to the asshole who tried to cut the line, "I AM THE
DOUCHEBAG THAT ARRIVES 2 HOURS EARLY TO SEE THE BANGLES!". I was at the front of the line ahead of a group of "Banglettes" who arrived very
early as well. We were treated to a brief soundcheck (Sorry, not taped) that included portions of "Anna Lee", "Manic Monday", and "Hazy Shade Of
Winter" all present here in the show. They spent a great deal of time sorting out Susannah's vox and guitar mix in her stage monitor. Fast forward
to the concert... The girls sounded excellent some 30 years on and their sunkist harmonies were still on the mark. Vicki interacted well with the
crowd, still the energy level of the audience was rather low. Thankfully, those in my immediate vicinity including fellow Dime contributor ijwthstd
were clearly their to see / hear the show and not to talk about their most recent experience at the dry cleaners or "Taco Bell".
The recording:
After my rather unsatisfactory experience with crowd noise two weeks prior at The Fixx / Modern English performance I decided to take a different
approach and lined up with the venue's left speaker. I was a little more than 20 feet away with nobody obstructing my line with the speaker with
the exception of a few latecomers walking into the VIP section blocking the lower stack. So, this is a left channel "stack tape". Not completely
mono but still not much stereo separation here. What is here is extremely clear given the circumstances and very enjoyable IMHO. Very little crowd
except during the much quieter "If She Knew What She Wants" and "Eternal Flame" you can hear a few distant murmurs in the background.
The pop sound at 0:50 during "Manic Monday" is actually the guitar tech plugging in one of Susanna's guitars without checking the levels first. Oops!
Of note:
I have only seen the girls perform live once before when they were on-stage guests of Duran Duran during their Strange Behaviour Tour in 1987.
They performed an acapella version of "If She Knew What She Wants" with Simon.
Of interest:
Vicki also served a brief stint in that other girl band from L.A.
