Notes

Few other bands have had as many "Best Of" collections released over the years as T. Rex. And for the most part, almost all are missing hits from their 1971 Electric Warrior album and before ("Bang a Gong," "Jeepster," "Ride a White Swan," "Hot Love," etc.). As confirmed by the title Great Hits 1972-1977, this 1994 collection is no different. While it does contain most of Bolan and company's biggest hits — "Metal Guru," "Solid Gold Easy Action," "Groover," "20th Century Boy" and others — it cannot be considered a definitive "Best Of." What makes this set different than others is the inclusion of A-sides from after 1973, something that most T. Rex compilations fail to do; hence, it's one of the few to contain their forgotten mid-'70s U.K. Top 20 hits "New York City" and "I Love to Boogie." But as most T. Rex fans know, Bolan peaked artistically and commercially in the early '70s, and the majority of his post-1973 work pales in comparison to his early hits. Hopefully one day a record company will finally collect T. Rex's true greatest hits from all eras.
