RENAISSANCE ENSEMBLE FUSES CLASSICAL AND ROCK AT FILLMORE
New York Times Review 2/70 by Mike Jahn
Clipping and transcription courtesy of Marc Skobac
Renaissance is the latest English band to attempt a fusion of classical music and rock. The group played Friday and last night on a bill with Savoy Brown, a British blues-rock band and the Voices of East Harlem, a soul gospel ensemble. The Kinks, originally scheduled, were forced to cancel when a member became Ill.
Renaissance shifts patterns often in the course of a song, playing a hard-rock theme, and then adding a jazz influence, a folk influence, and most frequently, a baroque-keyboard theme. This is classical influenced rock ("Bach-rock" is a term that has seen some use), but it is classical rock for lovers of rock. Where the New York Rock & Roll ensemble, probably the leading group to pick up a classical influence, separates its rock songs from its classical ones, Renaissance throws together all the ideas it has collected. Thus it frequently sounds like a harpsichord factory that has been struck by a bomb.
The group's strongest point is the often excellent piano of John Hawken. Its main faults however, are a certain lack of unity among the several ideas it may explore in the course of a song, and weak vocals. Its singing tends to be inconsequential.
With Mr. Hawken, the members of Renaissance are Keith Relf, vocals and guitar, his sister Jane Relf, vocals; Jim McCarty, drums, and Louis Cennamo, bass.

RENAISSANCE & COLD BLOOD Review: Billboard Magazine - 3/14/70
Review of the March 1, 1970 Show: Auditorium Theater, Chicago.
Two groups destined to become giants in this decade were warmly received in their Chicago debuts. Renaissance, a resurrection of the old Yardbirds, and Cold Blood, a nine-member group from San Francisco, drew large ovations from the sparse crowd here on March 1.
Renaissance, featuring Keith Relf and Jim McCarty, from the trend setting Yardbirds, mixed classical and rock as no other group has. Relf is now playing guitar along with his harmonica and vocals but the pace of the group is set by John Hawken on electric grand piano. The results were astounding as the group with McCarty on drums, Louis Cennamo on bass and Jane Relf on vocals, moved effortlessly through songs from its first Elektra Records album. When all the groups spawned by the Yardbirds (Cream, Led Zeppelin, Jeff Beck Group) are forgotten, Renaissance will still be making memorable music.
