One of our favorite bands
SPIRIT
Note:
Mark Andes became sick just before the start of the show and the band performs without a bass player.
This is a first generation copy of the master 5" diameter reels that came from the TMoQ collection.
During the second song (1984) the volume rails up and down a few times while the recording levels are being set.
There is a level of distortion in the loudest passages (overdriving of the microphone pre amp adds a crackling sound).
If only Ken and Dub had used a 20 dB attenuator the quality would be so much better.
Smaller dropouts from the tapes and the DAT conversion were removed and a couple tape flips were spliced together.
The first tape flip was after the song @ 24:32 with applause from another song tacked on to smooth the flip ending at 24:46.
The second tape flip @ 49:53 was during a song and a few seconds were removed to line up the beat.
Mono half track five inch reels at 7 1/2 ips need to be flipped or changed about every 20-25 minutes.
What a pain to thread a reel in the dark on the floor between your feet at a concert (thanks for that-we are so grateful).
Volume was also adjusted here and there as needed.
Sorry but nothing could be done about the wild volume swings in 1984.
I used the Phase Linear 1000 auto-correlator (mild noise reduction and dynamic expansion) during transfer to DAT.
Not the best sounding recordings, but very decent and these are from my first generation reels.
Thought it might be interesting to share some pics of the original transfer equipment.
