Comments:
1 - HELP!! If you have any uncirculated SPIRIT shows, or better quality FM
broadcasts than what's been posted here before, please share them. If you
know anybody who has shows that fit this category that aren't on DIME, please
dub off their stuff and share it. I'm trying to write a book on SPIRIT and need
all the information I can get. I have a database of over 1500 gigs 1967-1996, and
want to find as much information as I can to add to it. If you have any memories
of where you saw SPIRIT, the more specific the better (venue, city, date, supporting
bands, etc.), I'd love to know that as well. Please leave that in the comments
section or PM me. Thank you!
2 - Show description & comments follow:
This documents Jimi's only appearance on the "Tonight Show". Unfortunately, the
video portion of this show was not preserved, because Johnny Carson was not the
host. Flip Wilson was the guest host. I never saw it, but supposedly Flip Wilson
had a watermelon on the desk that he kept stroking. The original JIMI HENDRIX
EXPERIENCE had disbanded after a June 29, 1969 concert in Denver. Jimi likely
had been previously booked to do the show, so he brought his friend and early
band mate Billy Cox. This was Billy's first public appearance (discounting the
early 60's band) with Jimi, even though I believe he had done some recording with
Jimi prior to this show. With no drummer, they recruited TONIGHT SHOW drummer
Ed Shaughnessy to fill in. Supposedly, they glued some fake sideburns onto Ed to
make him look more "hip" ! Before anybody beats me up, the TONIGHT SHOW did
not move to Burbank, CA until 1972! Enjoy.
