Barry was born in the North of England and moved to London at the age of 15 where the young guitarist and budding musician met Steve Took of T-Rex and banjo player Larry Wallace. Through these connections Barry eventually ended up playing guitar for the blues band Blodwyn Pig alongside Mick Abrahams of Jethro Tull. In 1972 Barry moved to California and travelled to Mexico, doing acoustic shows before he was forced to return to the UK.
Back in London he was introduced to Marianne Faithfull through David Wilkie of Fleetwood Mac. Barry and Marianne began a writing partnership and produced the songs 'Broken English' and 'Why Do You Do It?', attracting to the attention of Chris Blackwell who signed Marianne to Island Records in 1978 and released the album 'Broken English' the following year.
Chris also asked Barry to join the Compass Point All-Star Band with Sly Dunbar, Robbie Washington and Wally Badarou, playing alongside the artists who recorded in the Nassau studio such as Joe Cocker, Grace Jones and Black Uhuru.
