Total Time ::: 51:00
::: VERY fine quality stereo audience tape up close in small club! Check the samples for self-to hear a bit o' the glory.
::: WARTS : Taper shut deck off between songs - now smoothed out. Many dropouts fixed, surely missed some (most easily cross channel patched due to narrow stereo). Track 7 cuts right at end of song (tape flip). Right channel has VERY faint background noise from Beta at times, mostly last song. DON'T let that scare you, this recording is great.
::: Steeleye Span & Woods Band founders. Terry is ex-Sweeney's Men & pre-Pogues here. First class folkrock rivaling anything out there.
::: DIFFERENT show than Gay&Terry Woods 1976-09-22 Dublin I put up before. Worth the download for "Dunlavin Green" alone, but this is another smashing psych-tinged folkrock recording of the highest order. To date, 35 years later, we only have a few live documents of this band. Don't miss it!
Recording Information ::: "large" Marantz cassette recorder with built-in stereo microphones -> master (narrow) stereo cassette (normal bias), Dolby off (slightly oversaturated) -> 1st generation Sony Betamax L750 tape.
Playback circa 1994 ::: master cassette (normal bias), Dolby off -> Sony SL-HF750 Super Beta hi-fi recorder -> 1st generation Sony Betamax L750 HiFi audio tape.
Playback 2011-10-18 ::: 1st generation Sony Betamax L750 HiFi audio tape -> Tascam CD-RW900SL pro CD recorder -> CD-RW -> computer, EAC secure -> wavs -> Audacity (normalisation to remove DC offset, channel alignment, fades &/or glitches, dropouts, volume adjustments, no EQ) -> CD Wave (track splits) -> Trader's Little Helper -> yer ears. First uploaded week of 2012-08-24.
Line-up ::: Terry Woods - acoustic guitar, concertina, vocals // Gay Woods - mandolin, autoharp, vocals // Ed Deane - guitar (some songs).
NOTE : The September show has David Morrison playing guitar, but from the commentary I believe the Woods Band guitarist is with them here.
Cool Sonics Series CS-181 ::: Thanks to the original taper, Mr Smith, an enthusiastic music lover of the first order! ::: Corrections welcome ::: Thanks to Zongo for taper introductions & tape assistance. This is the stuff my dreams are made of. Stunning psych-tinged folkrock. If you don't know their released material, seek it out. The collection CD that came out on HUX Records is a fine place to start. I can't say enough good things about these guys. Captivating, haunting, melodic. Enjoy!
Please note that a better transfer will be attempted at some point in the future from a digital copy that was made, which will hopefully improve things, including decreasing some background noise due to the Beta transfer & alignment. But at the rate things are going, I decided to get this out so people can enjoy it, as the years are flying by!
