Notes:
I'd like to start off my personal notes with notes from the original uploader of the raw tape source "Japrainbow" regarding this release:
These sound sources are copied from OG Record's first press by using the analogue record player.
I think this is the best sound of LIVE IN JAPAN at the moment. But many scratches has been made.
Especially ORGAN SOLO`THANK YOU in Side D.
Because I listened to this track as most favorite work again and again.
I bought this bootleg directly from manufacture when I was sixteen about 35 years ago. Now,I remember that one and only way to get this first press was mail order only, and then I have memorized 50 sets were pressed.
I have been to the manufacturer's house located near my house several times.
There were many OG records in his house Eric Clapton, YES, and so on.
Almost all of LIVE IN JAPAN which were released by OG Record remained unsold at that time.
This is why I think there is a possibility that records which has been known as second press were not produced by OG Record.
One of the bands most legendary performances of all time, and one of the most bootlegged Zeppelin recordings of all time.
Several versions of this performance have been released over the years, and in various formats.
Some versions are just straight releases of the so called "Soundboard Tape", and others are mixes that combine the "soundboard" with the 3 other known audience recording sources that are in circulation, trying to make as complete a recording as possible.
Over the years I've been collecting Zeppelin bootlegs, I've come across and downloaded several different versions of this show, mostly the "soundboard tape", trying to do what most Zeppelin collectors (especially the ones obsessed with the Japan tours) are trying to do...find the best sounding and most complete version available.
All versions bring something to the table (some have better sound than others, some are more complete in terms of songs and moments in between songs than others, etc), but they ALL seem to plagued with the same or simular issues.
- No version of the "soundboard tape" is 100% complete, whether it's a low gen or a bootleg release, all versions have cuts and are missing portions of tape, any version of the soundboard tape that's complete (or close to complete) has been patched together with different versions and transfers.
- They all run at the incorrect tape speed, either running too slow or too fast.
- They all suffer from volume issues, either running to hot, or too low.
- The drum fills and cymbals are the most dominant instruments in the mix, drowning out all the other instruments.
- They all have a slightly off kilter sound to them, there are moments where vocals and instruments come out nicely in the mix, and then they're suddenly pushed back ("Stairway To Heaven" and "Rock And Roll" are good examples of this)
There are different theories surrounding this recording.
Some say this is a true soundboard recording because the audience is pushed back in the mix, while the instruments are full front, and commentary from the band on stage can be heard clearly.
Others think that this recording was done by someone who was either positioned backstage or had their equipment on the stage.
As for the reasons for the off kilter sound quality, some think that this maybe a multi-track that's been poorly mixed.
All I personally know is that out of all the versions of this source that I've heard, there's only one release that has truly blown me away, and I personally think has the most balanced sound and volume to it...and it's unfortunately incomplete... (isn't that always the way).
The release used for this project is sourced from a vinyl LP release called "Live In Japan 1971", released by a label called "OG records", a label I'm personally not familar with, but it maybe as common a release as the more complete LP "Cellarful Of Noise" from "Noise Generator".
I don't know if this LP has ever been used for any fan or bootleg releases, but if it hasn't, I don't understand why it hasn't been used before because it is as I stated previously, the best version of the "soundboard" tape I've ever heard.
The cymbals aren't as dominant in the mix as they are in other releases, I can hear the vocals in songs that usually have issues with them (i.e: "Stairway To Heaven"), and the other instruments are coming quite nicely.
The only major issues with the release are that it's volume does run a little hot, it has some LP hiss and crackle, and it's running slightly fast.
So the goal of this project was to:
- Bring the volume down to a more tolerable level.
- Correct the tape speed issues.
- Reduce the LP hiss and crackle as much as possible without dulling the sound of the recording.
- Do some light EQ'ing to balance the instruments and bring out instruments buried in the raw recording (low end and guitar)
- Bring out some of the venues acoustics and more of the audience to give the recording.
In regards to the title:
The title comes from one of my favourite Anime movies Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away", and is also a sort of play on the title of EVSD's release of the Osaka tape "You Were There In Spirits", which is still the most complete version of the Osaka tape available.
Hope everyone here will enjoy this.
Cheers!
