In February 2007, a reel to reel tape was placed for sell on eBay for 12,500 US dollars. The tape was either a copy of, or... more likely; the original half track Bob Dylan master that contained four takes of the 1979 Solomon Burke song "Sidewalks, Fences, and Walls". The song was recorded by Dylan for possible inclusion on "Down in the Groove". All takes of the song are finished versions mixed down from the 2" multi-track, and are of officially releasable quality. Producer David Briggs (who was producer for and personal friend of Neil Young throughout his career) supervised the 1987 recording sessions. After the sessions were complete, CBS retained possession of the 2" master... but David Briggs gave this particular mix down master to a friend of his. The friend held on to it for twenty years, and then decided to put it up for sale to finance a business. All four takes now circulate in collector circles, because when the master reel remained unsold, the owner began selling cassette copies for $50 USD each on eBay. An individual who bought a copy began the circulation of the four takes on the Dylan Pool and on Expecting Rain in mp3 format.

Notes from the internet:
"Sidewalks, Fences & Walls" dates from the March 5th, 1987 Sunset Sound studio session in Los Angeles, California. This is a cover of the 1979 Solomon Burke tune which was considered for inclusion on the 1988 release Down In The Groove. Four takes surfaced in February 2007 and as the New Musical Express reported: "A rare recording of a previously unheard Bob Dylan song called 'Sidewalks, Fences, And Walls' is being offered for sale at $12,500 (£6,350). The song was produced by David Briggs, best known for his production work with Neil Young. It is being offered on Ebay by a Dylan fan and friend of Briggs, who claims to have been given the tape by the producer before his death in 1995. Dylan experts believe the recording to be authentic... A studio log from the time lists a song identified merely as 'Side Walks' and suggests Dylan was accompanied by Jesse Ed Davis (guitar), Gary Ray (clarinet), Robert Tsukamoto (bass) and Mark A Schatzkammer (drums)." http://www.nme.com/news/bob-dylan/26269

This is not a song that was written by Solomon Burke, rather it is a song that was written by Jerry "Swamp Dogg" Williams & Maurice Gimbel. The first recorded version of the song was in 1971 on soul singer Freddie North's Friend album (Mankind M-204). Solomon Burke recorded his version in 1979. It was released on a 7" promo single with a short & long version (Infinity INF 50,046), a standard 7" single with the B-side "Boo Hoo Hoo (Cra-Cra-Craya)" (Infinity INF 50 046), and on the album titled Sidewalks, Fences And Walls (Infinity INF 9024). Swamp Dogg produced the album, provided rhythm arrangements, plays piano and sings background vocals. The long version can only be found on the promo single.

In March 2008 a Dylan fan emailed me the circulating MP3 versions. I sent Swamp Dogg a CD-R copy of these recordings and this is what he wrote on the Southern Soul Yahoo group discussion board, http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/southernsoul/message/59197

Hello Everybody,
I just found out about this last night....one of the greatest honors of my music career, Bob Dylan singing my song, "Sidewalks Fences and Walls". David Chance turned me on to it. My educated guess is that Dylan's keyboard man was Williams "Smitty" Smith, a guy I grew up with and taught to play the piano. Dylan is actually singing from the version I produced on Soloman Burke; using Soloman's riffs, runs and inflections. I've never heard him this soulful nor have I ever heard him take on an r'n'b song this intricate. To be able to add Dylan to my list of who recorded my songs is part of my dreams coming true. Too bad it hasn't been released commercially.
Love and Happiness to all,
Swamp Dogg
