This is a fairly rare CD from the CSNY 1974 reunion tour. It is the first portion of the show at Roosevelt Raceway on September 8. The CD entitled “Roosevelt Raceway” that has the entire show; is of inferior quality. This soundboard recording is an upgrade.
This show is near the end of the 1974 tour, and the band is in excellent form. They rock from the very beginning with “Love the One You’re With” and never look back. All of them are in good voice, which wasn’t always the case on that tour. For Neil lovers, there is a killer version of “Helpless” as well as CSNY versions of a couple of rare tracks (“Walk On” and “Hawaiian Sunrise,” which has never been released). Really, the only downside in my opinion is the occasional intrusion of Joni Mitchell on a few of the songs (she accompanied them on a number of the 1974 concert dates). Normally, the addition of her vocals would be a plus, but she tries too hard to find harmonies that just aren’t there.
As is the case with many of these concert recordings, this one is not without its glitches. There is a short dropout 7:25 into “Almost Cut My Hair.” This dropout is also on the Roosevelt Raceway CD, so it is part of whatever master this came from. Also, unlike Roosevelt Raceway, “Long May You Run” strangely fades out before the song is finished. It is about this point in the Roosevelt Raceway CD that the audio quality begins to progressively deteriorate, so perhaps whoever mastered “Reunion 1974” decided to deal with that problem in this way. None of this detracts from the overall enjoyment of this CD.
