Notes

Big 'Fro historical notes continued...

When me and Big P first started corresponding we discussed what we would love to see on Big 'Fro one day. Both of us desperately wanted to do a Donny Hathaway release but we had no material and no sources for any material. My next "big one" now that the Sly was out of the way, was an Ike & Tina Turner release. But so far I only had 2 or 3 tracks for that one. Another for me was to do the ultimate Otis Redding release. Big P in turn wanted to do a Curtis Mayfield as his "dream release" - everything from the track selection to the artwork. I told him to go for it and in 2 weeks I received the master for this one and an email with the completed artwork. I changed nothing whatsoever as it was perfect the way it was. This one was 100% Big P's work. Personally I think it was a beautiful tribute to Curtis that nobody in their right mind could ever find fault with.

---------------------

This was a "dream release" for me when I found it at the same traveling record convention I bought the Funkasaurus boot at. I had been listening to Curtis ALOT at the time since the Curtom label had rereleased a bunch of recordings with bonus tracks in 2000 after his death. I had never seen any boots of him, let alone any of this quality. I first seeded this show at STG back in the fall of '03 and thinking that relatively few people were familiar with him, I penned an introduction to persuade downloaders to check him out. Little did I know, there were over a thousand fans waiting to grab it. Since others who've reseeded the show since have seen fit to reprint my words, I'm including them once more. The man truly inspired me during his lifetime and continues to today. I hope he inspires you all too.

"If you haven't heard of Curtis Mayfield, do yourself a favor and give him a listen. If his superlative songwriting skills, smooth guitar licks and sweet falsetto vocals aren't enough to grab you, consider this; his messages of love, compassion, perseverance, and temperance are just as socially and politically relevant today as they were during the civil rights movement. Curtis, we miss you." -- bcc32065 (Fall '03)

---------------------

Hush now child and don't you cry
Your folks might understand you by and by
Move on up towards your destination
You may find from time to time
Complications

Bite your lip and take a trip
Though there may be wet road ahead
You cannot slip
So move on up and peace you will find
Into the steeple of beautiful people
Where there's only one kind

So hush now child and don't you cry
Your folks might understand you by and by
Just move on up and keep on wishing
Remember your dreams are your only schemes
So keep on pushing
Take nothing less - not even second best
And do not obey - you must have your say
You can past the test

Move on up to a greater day
With just a little faith if you put your mind to it
You can surely do it

Just Move on up
Move on up
Move on up!

"Now is always the right time,
With something positive in your mind,
Whenever something pulls you down,
Just get back up and hold your ground."
