When original Byrds Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark reteamed and toured together as an acoustic duo in late 1977,
the world seemed ripe for a full Byrds reunion. Although this would not happen until 1991 at their induction
into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame (mere months before Clark’s untimely death),
there would only be partial reunions between various members of the original lineup
(which also included bassist Chris Hillman and drummer Michael Clarke).
Although Hillman had joined the duo sporadically throughout the year
(and would join them permanently the following year to perform and record as McGuinn, Clark & Hillman)
this would be the first of only a handful of shows that David Crosby would surprise audiences by joining his old bandmates on stage.
The three musicians had formed the group back in 1964 (as The Jet Set) and these performances recorded at the Boardinghouse in San Francisco
are reminiscent of their very early years when each had worked as folk singers on the acoustic coffeehouse circuit of the early 60’s.
Both recordings have solo acoustic sets by Clark and McGuinn and the second show has a special acoustic set by Crosby
(performing The Lee Shore and Drive My Car, a song which would not appear on record for another12 years).
After McGuinn’s set, the three old friends reunite for a loose and lively performance of Byrds classics while delighting
the audience with their unmistakable musical chemistry and talent.
