With the release of "CHROME DREAMS" (the acetate) A long lost puzzle-piece in the career history of NEIL YOUNG is finally in place.
This collection of songs, recorded between September 1975 and November 1976 (with one track from late 1974 thrown in) never got past the acetate stage that we present here for the first time anywhere.
Fragments of the "CHROME DREAMS" project have trickled out of "the vault" with almost predictable regularity;
and the first three of them turned up just a few months later on "AMERICAN STARS AND BARS" ("Homegrown" is a grittier mix here, though).
"DECADE" and "HAWKS AND DOVES" each benefited a song, and two others ended up on "COMES A TIME" ("Hold Back the Tears" being completely different take).
Three alternate-version "RUST NEVER SLEEPS" songs ("Pocahontas" being the released version-without the overdubs!) are arguably, the highlights of the LP.
A re-recorded "TOO FAR GONE" appeared on 1989"s "FREEDOM" and "STRINGMAN" was finally released on the "UNPLUGGRED" album.
So after sixteen years, the "CHROME DREAMS" legacy has been played out.
The rich and varied songs take on new meanings in the context served here; and each one becomes more important where they were displaced to.
All of those ducks are finally in a row.
