Notes about the band's performance:
I'd like start off my notes by quoting some review's about this show that were posted on Argenteumastrum.com,and LedZeppelin.com, because their takes on the performance are quite spot on, and I couldn't have summed it up better myself:
Argenteumastrum.com:
An excellent and surprisingly powerful show! Robert's voice is really strong and the band is really cooking right from the first few bars of Immigrant Song. The local swimming pool was tonight's arena of the show (also used as a dance hall in occasion). Prior to the date of the concert or dance, the pool was drained, and a complex wooden support structure was installed in its place, upon which panels of wood flooring would sit. So, not quite the danger was present at the venue as one might think but Plant was wary of that: "I don't know whether the 12-foot end's this one or that one. God help us! I'm sure you must have had a Town Hall! It's gonna be a silly night tonight. We'd like you all to feel at home. Just think of the drop beneath you and the drop that might come eventually!" Dazed And Confused has some really funky jam interludes led by Jones and Page and the end medley is excellent, with Plant's vocal prowess being showcased from the lowest crooning to the highest shrieking. The band also threw in some nice encores on this tour, with Eddie Cochran's Weekend getting aired three times, at Dundee, here in Ipswich, and in Bournemouth, with the latter show also featuring a cover of Jerry Lee Lewis' It'll Be Me. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the tour, however, is the aforementioned performance of Gallow's Pole at this show in Ipswich, being the first known performance of the song since Copenhagen in May 3rd that year.
From LedZeppelin.com:
"I remember so well the night Robert Plant spoke to me, I had brought one of the above
posters 20p it cost. Me and my mates where sitting on the floor right in front of the stage
and plant said to me ( you didnt pay 20p for that did you ? ) to be spoken to by the one and
only Robert Plant think I would have paid £20.00 . I just said sure did, it was an amazing night
I still have my ticket but sadly not the poster. I also remember waiting for the encore with
the veiwing gallery bouncing up and down thinking god I hope that holds out.
it was a nght never to be forgotten"
- Cliff Mcnamara
"I attended the concert that night with my girlfriend who has since become my wife. We were sitting on the floor within 8 feet of Robert Plant. What a fantastic experience. I just bought a 2 CD set of the live concert online. I can't wait to hear it.
I did not hear about the concert until the tickets had been on sale for 2 days. Not expecting any to be left I went to the St. Mathews Baths ticket window and asked if there were any more for sale. A nice lady said yes, luv. I couldn't believe it.
When the doors opened that night most of the blokes headed for the sides of the room. I went straight for the front. Having attended the Isle of Wight event earlier that year and being no closer than 30 meters from the stage at any time it was just amazing to be so close.
My brother in law in Tampa took some pictures that night but after all this time he has yet to send me copies that he has promised. Perhaps when I tell him about the CD he might be inclined to find them. If so I will certainly advise him to post them"

Notes about recordings of this performance:
For those that may not know, there are 3 tape sources of this show in circulation, but there are speculations/rumours that there could be a 4th and 5th tape source, but it's possibly being hoarded by either a label or the taper themself.
Bootledz.com wrote in their comparison section about the possibility of 5th tape source being used on EVSD's release "Feelin' Groovy (Definitive Edition)":
11-16-71, sources 1-3 & possibly 2 more
Feelin' Groovy Definitive Version (Empress Valley, 3cd), Ipswich 1971 (TDOLZ, 2cd)
Both of these titles use the first two sources heavily.
TDOLZ uses a third source for Whole Lotta Love.
Empress Valley uses a different source than any prior release. It is possible that it comes from an unreleased portion of one of the first two sources. (Just as likely, it could be a fourth source.) This title is the only release to include the encores "Weekend" and "Gallows Pole." The last song briefly uses a different source to fill a gap. There are at least two sources for these encores. Do they belong to one of the familiar sources or are they hints of a 4th and 5th source?
Empress Valley could have placed this show on two discs.
The main tape source of this project ("Gallows Pool") was released around the same time as "Feelin' Groovy (Definitive Edition)", and is a mixture of just as many of the tape sources as "Feelin' Groovy" is, but for some reason, Bootledz glanced over it when it is in fact superior to "Feelin' Groovy" for these reasons:
- Gusto used a superior sounding tape source for their release, It was recorded closer to the stage then the tapes used for "Feelin' Groovy", and has a warmer, more natural sound then "Feelin' Groovy".
- It doesn't have the annoying long fades that "Feelin' Groovy" has.
- They (Gusto) fit the whole show on to 2 discs, EVSD could've done the same, but did the unnescessary thing of putting the show on 3 discs.
Why we chose to work on this recording, and what we've done to make this project:
This is one of my favourite Zeppelin shows of all time, and one of the bands performances I've always wanted to try and work on, just to throw my hat into that ring, and offer up the community a version I worked on, not to create some "definitive edition" of this concert.
If the rumours are true about there being another tape source of this show existing, then we will definately be seeing more releases claiming to be "defintive editions".
This project is just something I've always wanted to do, and I hope people here will like what we've done.
Even though the "Gallows Pool" recording is superior to "Feelin' Groovy", it does have it's fair share of problems as well.
Here's a breakdown of the issues we found on the main source recording, and what we did to make this project:
The original recording was amplified a little too much, creating some distortion in the channels, and issues in the recording (i.e: distortion/clipping in Plant's voice when he belts out the high notes).
The original recording had pretty decent sound, as I said, the Gusto release is much better then EVSD's, but some instruments/members of the group were more up front in the mix then the others.
Plant's voice was the most dominant of them all, and then it would be Bonham's cymbals.
Jimmy, Jonesy, and Bonham's drum fills were coming through, but not as clearly as Plant and the cymbals, so we wanted to try and create a balance in the instruments.
The original recording is a pretty complete tape.
It doesn't have as many tape cuts as the older recordings do, and the label did a pretty consistent job patching up whatever holes there were in the original recording with the other tape sources, and the shifts from source to source are all quite smooth.
I say that they did a "pretty consistent job" patching the holes in the original recording because although they patched up a large number of them, they didn't patch up ALL of the holes in the recording.
There are missing portions of tape found in "Going To California", "Dazed And Confused", "Celebration Day", and "Whole Lotta Love", which could've been filled with one of the other tape sources because those other recordings have the missing portions of tape.
So that's why it was nescessary to use material from "Feelin' Groovy,Definitive Edition" as a patching source.
The original recording had quite a bit of hiss, and could definately be the heard the most during the acoustic set, so we wanted to try and remove as much of that as possible.
We wanted to try and bring out some things that were buried in the recording (clapping, commentary, etc).
After we did the remastering, we could hear a lot of things we didn't hear before in the raw source.
For example, the statement made by Cliff Mcnamara about Robert acknowledging him and asking him about paying 20p for the poster is true, and is actually on this recording.
I totally missed this conversation when I was listening to the raw recording.
Highlights Of This Show Are:
- Immigrant Song
- Black Dog
- Since I've Been Loving You
- Stairway To Heaven
- Dazed And Confused (they're still in experimenting stages with the little teases of soul music, leading up to them using "The Them From Shaft" in the song)
- Whole Lotta Love
- Weekend
- Gallows Pole (Any performance of this song is a highlight because of the rarity of it)
How we came up with the title name:
We came up with the title name "Internationally Famous" while doing some research on the performance, and on the town of Ipswich itself.
The title comes from a promotional poster for the gig, it says "For One Appearance Only, Internationally Famous, Led Zeppelin", I found the poster on LedZeppelin.com, and thought that it sounded quite clever, and had a connection to the concert in some way.
We had other ideas for possible titles.
We looked at the Plantations from this gig, and thought that these ones would've been suitable for the project:
- "Del Wimbles (Wiggles?), And His Good,Good Band", (Robert says this at the beginning of the show)
- "I'm Sure You Must've Had A Town Hall", (Robert says this a few songs into the performance)
- "Electric Warriors" or "Bang A Gong", (Robert makes several references to Marc Bolan/T-Rex throughout the performance, most likely due to the fact that T-Rex's album "Electric Warrior" was big in the U.K, and England was swept up in a moment of "T-Rex Mania")
Those were quite fitting, they made reference to the performance, but they didn't really pack that much punch.
So then we tried to think of other clever ways we could make a reference to the show, or to Ipswich, and we came up these ideas:
- "Madmen Across The Water" (which we thought could reference the band, and the swimming pool)
- "East Of Ipswich" (that reference is from a Michael Palin show he wrote and starred in, it makes reference to Ipswich, and the band were also big fans of Python, so that reference is kind of apt)
- "Zeppelin,Bloody,Zeppelin" (I personally thought of this one because I thought I could hear a slight instrumental tease of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" during the "Whole Lotta Love" medley, but maybe that's just my ears playing tricks on me)
None of those really felt quite right though, so we settled on using "Internationally Famous" as our title.
We hope everyone here will enjoy this.
Cheers!
