REVIEW
Well if you really want a review of this gig read the excellent book “I Swear I Was There” by David Nolan, It really is an interesting read about this gig. Basically this gig was influential in starting a whole scene in Manchester, or so the book says. The tape thankfully was released on a wonderful CD, that includes not only the entire gig but also gave us our first glimpse of the August 29 Screen on the Green gig that wasn’t to get released until 2001. Prior to the release there was a far inferior quality tape that was circulated. This gig still includes “Whatcha Gonna Do About It” adding to the importance, since that song would no longer starting in August. There is lots of interesting in between song banter between Johnny and the crowd that is reall yenjoable to listen to and you can tell by the sound quality that the hall was only partially filled.
DRAWBACKS
There seems to be some volume adjustment on the first song “Did You No Wrong” which also sadly fades up in the beginning. As with a lot of tapes the taper seems to adjust things on the first song and then lets it roll. Why would there be a copy of the first Manchester gig which not that many people went to but not the highly attended second one in July? Also the fact that to get the complete gig you have to get both the CD & the LP versions.
