Newport 1963-1965

As in the original set this is a reconstruction of the facts as far as I have been able to determine them after comprehensive study of existing sources. The audio files are an attempt to compile all available tracks to date of Dylan appearences at Newport Folk Festival (1963-1965) in their chronological order, conceived as if this were a single recording for each period.

Here you will find an updated version, with a few modifications. The first two verses of With God On Our Side duet from july 28, 1963 are replacing those two first verses previously taken from july 27 version. Chimes of Freedom from 1964 is complete but using the DVD version, the missing part patched from BS#7. And Mr. Tambourine Man acoustic version after the electric concert in 1965 is also composed adding the harmonica and last verse missed on the DVD.

The changes log file is as following:

v.1.0 original release

v.1.1 paper research [the_hypnotist_collector (#7)_english] revised:

pag. 3 lines 11-13 (did not count the blank lines)

pag. 8 lines 18-21

pag. 14 lines 11-15

pag. 18 lines 3-10, 16

pag. 20 lines 15-16, 37

pag. 22 lines 6-7

pag. 23 lines 13-14

pag. 25 lines 22

pag. 26 lines 7-12, 25-26

v.1.2 updated text files

v.1.3 additional photos; pdf of scan_10051 including added explanation text

v.1.4 paper research [the_hypnotist_collector (#7)_english] revised once again:

pag. 24 line 27... about Ronnie Gilbert (it was mentioned Jean Ritchie instead on the previous version)

some other changes have been done to provide more correct sentences or make them more understandable.

v.1.5 d1t10-11 are now three different tracks instead, d1t10-12, where d1t10 is two first verses of the song (with god on our side duet performed on July 28, 1963), d1t11 the remaining part of the original d1t10 (two more verses from july 27, 1963 afternoon workshop) as included on MIRROR to only partially complete the missing segment of July 28 performance.
d1t12 remains the same as old d1t11, but aligned on SB after the changes.
d2t10 and d3t17 replaced by a complete version of each, both using the DVD tracks from the original release of this compilation.

d1t10 taken from DVD "No Direction Home".

d2t10 missing part patched from BS#7.

d3t17 completed with a repitched fragment of the circulating stereo version.

rest of the tracks (d2t11-12 and d3t18-19) aligned on sector boundaries with the replaced ones.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

For those who downloaded the previous version (v.1.0) only tracks that have been altered are the above mentioned, so,

d1t01-09
d2t01-09
d3t01-16

remain unchanged.

(*) I started working on this track in may 2008 and can't actually remember which source I used or if I mixed both to patch intro from the DVD, but being harsher than the Vanguard original, I'm pretty sure the bootleg track was only used for mixing purposes once deEq'd, if so.

[46:13.052] Total Time

sources:

1 extracted from DVD "The Other Side Of The Mirror"
2 small fragment from German TV documentary (in the background get to hear a small part of the song)
3 fragment from 1964 afternoon version extracted from Columbia DVD, edited as appeared in FESTIVAL and "The Other Side Of The Mirror" to make a listenable segment of the next 16 sec. track, which is the only circulated part of the actual performance.
4 uncirculated (16 sec. harmonica included here can be listened in the background as presented on the film FESTIVAL and later on DVD "The Other Side Of The Mirror" mixed with 1964 afternoon version).
5-13 extracted from DVD "The Other Side Of The Mirror"; maggie's farm (12) mixed and completed with a lowgen copy of the stereo circulating tape.
14 eac from bootleg "From Newport To The Ancient Empty Street in LA" (log file included).
15 mixed and completed with a lowgen copy of the stereo circulating tape.
16-18 extracted from DVD "The Other Side Of The Mirror" but just edited in the correct order; dylan talk on mr. tambourine man (17) was patched using the stereo tape, as was also the significant fragment of this song missing on the columbia DVD (the stereo tape had to be repitched; the mix may not be perfect, but we will have to bare with it as it gets).

19 extracted from "The Other Side Of The Mirror", has nothing to do with the Newport Festival but a partial inclusion of the official track from The Times They Are A-Changin' album used as an epilogue on the DVD over the last credits. I just thought it was OK to preserve it as a bonus track in the same meaning intended in the video.

t14 from bootleg has been equalized in order to adjust levels to the DVD recording and the stereo tape used for the mix.
