1. Eastern Rain (Radio Broadcast-26 Dec 1968) 03:37
Recorded for a radio broadcast in 1968, this is a different
version than the one on Fairport's second LP. Incredibly,
the group manages to recreate the sound of the studio
version in this basically live performance. Fairport
Convention: Sandy Denny, vocals; Ian Matthews,
vocals; Richard Thompson, electric guitar; Simon Nicol,
electric guitar; Ashley Hutchings, electric bass;
Martin Lamble, drums.

2. Booksong (Radio Broadcast-27 Dec 1968) 03:05
Recorded for a radio broadcast in 1968, this version may
better the LP version; lan and Sandy singing beautifully
and a great solo by Richard, which proves how well he
had mastered his technique even at this early date.
Fairport Convention: Sandy Denny, vocals; Ian Matthews,
vocals; Richard Thompson, electric guitar; Simon Nicol,
electric guitar; Ashley Hutchings, electric bass; Martin
Lamble, drums.

3. Died For Love (Demo-Dec 1977) 04:46
This has a totally different lyric than the final First
Light LP version, and was recorded in December 1977 as a
demo. Obviously, Richard sang the lead that would later
go to Linda.

4. Jealousy (Demo-1982) 02:28
A demo recording from mid 1982, this original song was
Richard's attempt at a "long lost'" Everly Brothers song;
It's catchy melody has all the elements to be just that.
Don and Phil please take note. All instruments played by
Richard.

5. I'll Keep It With Mine (concert-1982) 06:16
Just one of the treasures from Richard and Linda's 1982
farewell tour of the states. It was the first time this
Fairport classic was ever performed by any alumni; and a
beautiful performance it is. Linda Thompson vocals;
Richard Thompson, guitar/vocals; Simon Nicol acoustic
guitar/vocals; Pete Zorn, bass; Dave Mattacks, drums.

6. Calvary Cross (concert-29 Oct 1983) 07:16
This was recorded in NYC in October of 1983, and was a
spontaneous addition to the set one night, Richard says,
to relieve the boredom! It had not been performed onstage
for almost six years and is truly an inspired performance.
Richard Thompson, vocals/guitar; Simon Nicol, vocals/guitar;
P. Donaldson, bass; Gerry Conway, drums.

7. First Light (Demo-Dec 1977) 03:59
A starker version than the LP version, which therefore
highlights Linda's vocal. The lack of extra instrumentation
gives a more appropriate setting for the lyric, in a
translation of a song by Shaykh Muhammad ihn-al Hamid. Another
demo from December 1977.

8. Move It (concert-Aug 1984) 03:24
This was recorded in London in August 1984 at one of the
Fairport warm-up gigs for Cropedy. Richard does a great job
on this vintage Cliff Richard song. Richard's sister actually
screamed as part of the studio audience on the original Cliff
version from 1959. Dave Pegg, bass; Simon Nicol, acoustic
guitar; Dave Mattacks and B. Rowland, drums.

9. How I Wanted To (Concert-15 Sep 1983) 05:14
corded in Sweden in September 1983. This one features a fine
vocal by Richard. Simon Nicol, guitar; Dave Pegg, bass; Dave
Mattacks, drums.

10. Speechless Child (Demo-Jun 1980) 04:17
This never before released song was recorded as a demo at Dave
Pegg's Woodworm Studios in June of 1980. Linda's impassioned
vocal suits this tale of an autistic child. All instruments
played by Richard.

11. I'm A Dreamer (Concert-1982) -5:03
A beautiful song, first recorded in late 1980 for the unreleased
Gerry Rafferty produced album. It had become a staple of the
Thompson's live show, and is one of the only Sandy Denny songs
ever performed by the duo. Linda Thompson vocals; Richard Thompson,
guitar/vocals; Simon Nicol acoustic guitar/vocals; Pete Zorn,
bass; Dave Mattacks, drums.

12. Madness Of Love (Concert-1 May 1977) 06:43
From a 1977 concert, this song was planned for release but never
recorded, along with several other songs from what some people
call the "Islamic" period of Thompsonology. Richard's guitar
flanger effect was never used again because it broke after the
gig! Additional Personnel: Preston Hayman, drums; Abdul-Latif-Whiteman,
Vox. keyboards; Abdul-Jabar Pickstock, percussion; Hal Amin Evans,
bass.

13. Traces Of My Love (Demo-1979) 04:39
A Sunnyvista demo, and possibly a better version than ended up on
the LP. Additional Personnel: P. Wingfield, keyboards; Simon Nicol,
guitar; Dave Pegg, bass; John Kirkpatrick, concertina; M. Spencer Ascot,
drums.

14. Flowers Of The Forest (Concert-1982) 03:52
This was a request by Flypaper previous to a gig in Richard's solo tour
of Fall, 1982. He enjoyed doing it so much that he performed it several
more times and is surely a rare performance indeed. It is one of the only
vocal traditional songs performed solo by Richard, and had never been
performed by him previously.

15. Tear Stained Letter (Concert-Oct 1983) 08:35
One of the highlights of the Big Band Tour of 1983. Richard's guitar solo
left many speechless. Richard Thompson, vocals/guitar; Simon Nicol,
vocals/guitar; P. Donaldson, bass; Gerry Conway, drums; Pete Zorn,
Pete Thomas, saxes; Alan Dunn, accordion.

16. Jennie (Concert-28 Nov 1984) 04:20
Saving the best for last; this song was written for the Across A Crowded
Room LP in early 1984, but was considered inappropriate for inclusion by
producer Joe Boyd. Well, we have to differ with that decision, as we feel
this is perhaps one of Richard's outstanding songs to date. Notice how
easily Richard slips into the song after a bit of innocuous chatter. This
ballad is well suited to the solo performance here, recorded in late
November of 1984.

Source Info

1. Together Again (Concert-Oct 1983) 06:30
Probably the only artist Richard faithfully covers in his live shows,
with the exception of the Everly Brothers, is Jerry Lee Lewis. This is
one of the best versions recorded, during the 1983 Big Band Tour of the
States. Richard Thompson, vocals/guitar; Simon Nicol, vocals/guitar;
P. Donaldson, bass; Gerry Conway, drums; Pete Zorn, Pete Thomas, saxes;
Alan Dunn, accordion.

2. Strange Affair (Demo-Dec 1977) 04:13
Also from the First Light demos, this simpler musical approach to this
song is more suited to the lyrical beauty of this poem translated by
Richard from the Arabic Poem "Song and Praise of the Shaykh" by Si
Fadul aI-Huwari.

3. Walking Through A Wasted Land (Concert-1984) 04:06
Recorded just before the Crowded Room sessions, this may be one of
the only times this was performed live, at what was one of the last
big band shows. Richard Thompson, electric guitar, vocals; Pete Zorn,
alto saxophone; Pete Thomas, tenor saxophone; Alan Dunn, piano accordion;
Simon Nicol, electric guitar, vocals; Ruari McFarlane, electric bass;
Dave Mattacks, drums.

4. Mind Your Own Business (Concert-date unknown) 03:22
Richard has been performing this song for many years. Here it's given
a new approach with the shared vocals of Clive and Chris. Richard
Thompson, electric guitar, vocals; Christine Collister, vocals; Clive
Gregson, electric guitar, vocals; Ruari McFarlane, electric bass; Gerry
Conway, drums.

5. She Moves Through The Fair (Concert-1990) 04:09
Someone asked Richard to do this song before a show in the summer of
1990; he'd never performed this old Fairport song solo before that.
Richard Thompson, acoustic guitar, vocals.

6. John The Gun (Concert-1985) 05:06
One of the great songs from Sandy Denny, a timeless statement given
a powerful reading live in the U.S. in 1985. Richard Thompson, electric
guitar, vocals; Christine Collister, vocals; Clive Gregson, electric
guitar, vocals; Ruari McFarlane, bass; Gerry Conway, drums.

7. The Poor Ditching Boy (Concert-1973) 04:06
First, apologies for the sound on this one and on "The Little Beggar
Girl". It is the only tape we know of from an early Albion show (in
the Interim between Albions I & II) - this group had more of Fairport
than Fairport at the time! Shortly after this tape was copied, the
original was stolen from Joe Boyd's car in London - sorry Ashley,
hope they're enjoying it. Albion Country Band: Richard Thompson,
electric guitar, vocals; Linda Thompson, vocals; Simon Nicol, electric
dulcimer; Ashley Hutchings, electric bass; Dave Mattacks, drums.

8. Autopsy (Radio Broadcast-18 Mar 1969) 04:25
Recorded in the Heyday era, it seemed only proper to include this rare
live take of this Fairport song. Fairport Convention: Sandy Denny,
vocals; Richard Thompson, electric guitar; Simon Nicol, electric guitar;
Ashley Hutchings, electric bass; Martin Lamble, drums.

9. Things You Gave Me (Concert-12 Nov 1978) 03:12
Richard and Linda learned this from Rick Nelson's Country Fever album
which featured one of Richard's favourite guitarists, James Burton.
Recorded on the 1978 First Light tour. Linda Thompson, vocals; Richard
Thompson, acoustic guitar, vocals; John Kirkpatrick, button accordion;
Sue Harris, hammered dulcimer; Dave Pegg, mandolin; Dave Sheen, electric
bass, kick drum.

10. Bad News Is All The Wind Can Carry (Demo-1971) 03:06
Upon hearing this song at Ashley Hutchings' house, it was suggested as
a track for D&G II. Richard replied, "Over my dead body". He relented,
we got the song and our title. This is from his first demo tape, recorded
circa 1971 - early 1972. Richard Thompson, harmonium, vocals.

11. Borrowed Time (Concert-15 Sep 1983) 07:23
One of Richard's great songs, infrequently performed live; from the same
1983 Swedish show as "How I Wanted To" on D&G I. Richard Thompson,
electric guitar, vocals; Simon Nicol, electric guitar, vocals; Dave Pegg,
electric bass, vocals; Dave Mattacks, drums.

12. The End Of The Rainbow (Concert-Nov 1985) 03:52
A very popular song, albeit dark, recorded in Croydon, London in November
1985, here with solo electric guitar. Richard Thompson, electric guitar,
vocals.

13. Now Be Thankful (Concert-1975) 02:53
Live from a Richard and Linda show in 1975, a rare performance of Richard's
last recording with Fairport. Linda Thompson, vocals; Richard Thompson,
electric guitar, vocals; John Kirkpatrick, button accordion; Dave Pegg,
electric bass; Dave Mattacks, drums.

14. Layla (Demo-Dec 1977) 04:30
A 1977 demo recorded long before the First Light LP, featuring a percussive
backing and additional lyrics. Richard Thompson, acoustic guitar, vocals;
Linda Thompson, vocals; Ian Whiteman, Indian pump-organ; Amin Evans,
mandocello; Roger Powell, percussion; Paul Pickstock, percussion.

15. The Little Beggar Girl (Concert-1973) 03:51
Also from the live Albion show, a rare live version of a song from Bright
Lights. That's Ashley Hutchings assisting with vocals. Albion Country Band:
Linda Thompson, vocals; Richard Thompson, electric guitar, vocals; Simon Nicol,
electric guitar; Ashley Hutchings, electric bass. vocals; Dave Mattacks, drums.

16. Down Where The Drunkards Roll (Concert-1990) 04:53
An old chestnut with a new guitar arrangement, from the summer of 1990.
Richard Thompson, acoustic guitar, vocals.

17. Who Knows Where The Time Goes (Radio Broadcast-4 Feb 1969) 04:20
Richard reckons this 1969 radio broadcast was the first time Fairport did the song. The approach is very different and we think it's a real gem.
Fairport Convention: Sandy Denny, vocals; Richard Thompson, acoustic guitar;
Simon Nicol, acoustic guitar; Ashley Hutchings, electric bass.
