Original Notes Posted In The Raw Transfer's Textfile Regarding This Show/Source:

I think I have something really special to share with all Dimers, but first a bit of background.
RLR has been a very active trader back in the early 80's with very wide musical tastes: he could go from Kiss to Joni Mitchell; from Genesis to Deep Purple, Queen, Simple Minds, The Who, Springsteen and many more.
In the past I could access his enormous collection to get many U2 tapes some of which I have been sharing with you folks.

RLR had all sorts of tapes in his collection, traded not long after the show happened so most of them are low generation, in particular tons of shows recorded in Italy which to me are some of the most interesting.
Some of them, I had never seen circulating in the trading circuit.
Unfortunately he did not care about generation so this info, except for the shows he has as masters, is not available.

RLR has kindly given me access once again to his collection.
It was like a "kid in a toy shop" situation: it was hard to select tapes and at the end I came home with some 250 tapes to listen and eventually to transfer in the digital domain.
Some of them will be shared here, possibly the most interesting ones.

Our Notes:

A very good recording/performance that unfortunately suffers from a few technical issues (distortion, fluxing, running at the incorrect tape speed), preventing it from making it perfect, and probably held in regard with Who collectors.

The recording starts out quite rough, but then settles in by the time the band plays "Baba O'Riley". It sounds like the taper was moving about, trying to find the right place to tape.

In the raw recording (and in this remaster), you can definitely hear that this recording was taped a fair distance away from the stage (you can hear the guitar work loud and clear, but the rest of the instruments, especially vocals are barely coming through), but not so far away that the taper wasn't able to capture that brightness of Pete's guitar work, and the "echo effect" of the venue's acoustics and the tapers position.

I personally like that "Echo Effect" sound in a recording, it gives me an idea of how large a crowd/venue the band was performing in. This show (in terms of it's sound quality) actually reminds me of the recording that was made of Deep Purple's performance at Gaelic Park, The Bronx, New York, August, 31st, 1972. Anybody who's heard that show might understand what I'm talking about.

This project needed to have almost a complete overhaul to not only correct the issues plaguing the tape, but also make it sound pleasant to the ear, it was a difficult project to try and put together, and it's far from perfect, but we did the best we could, we're quite pleased with the results, and we hope everyone here will enjoy this.

What we've done to make this project:

- We've tried to correct all of the tape fluxes, tape cuts, channel drops, and other issues that were found in the raw recording to the best of our abilities.

- We've tried to correct the tape speed issues that plagued the raw recording to the best of our abilities. it was originally running way too slow, and we've brought it up to the correct tape speed.

- We've tried to buffer out as much of the distortion that's found in the raw tape as possible/to the best of our abilities. We have also tried to achieve a much more pleasant/balanced sound to the project, yet still maintains the sharpness of the raw tape.

- We've tried to bring out things that were lost in the original recording due to the raw tape running at the incorrect speed, tape distortion, tape hiss, etc such as drum fills, bass, vocals, and audience/venue presence.

- Some of the tracks in the raw recording weren't properly split into their own individual tracks after the raw tape transferred, for some reason "Summertime Blues" and "My Wife" were both together, so we've properly split all of the audio into individual tracks.

While thinking up title names, I could think of none more appropriate and suitable than "The Modfather", which is actually a title Paul Weller (from The Jam) has given himself, but to me The Who are the original Modfather's.

Hope everyone here will enjoy this.

Cheers
