THE GUESS WHO
AMERICAN WOMAN
Expanded Remastered Edition
RMW 234
In 2000, the reactivated Buddha label (with its name spelled correctly at last) released remastered CDs by several artists, including Harry Nilsson and The Guess Who. It seemed like a promising next chapter in the label's history, but it went bankrupt again, and what we got was all we'll ever get.
Their remaster of "American Woman" was very nice, except it was subjected to the brickwall limiting treatment and had few, if any, natural dynamics. "The Ultimate Collection" on BMG had three previously unreleased tracks from "American Woman" sessions, which I added to the end of the Buddha CD, to have them all in one place. These were also overdriven into clipping. This was undone on all the tracks except 3 (Talisman), and the dynamics were restored. No changes to the sound were made." Upon further examination, several of the Buddha tracks needed phase correction, so that was done.
