Total Time ::: 1:12:02

::: Somewhat distant AUD but with high end still relatively intact & virtually no audience noise. Check samples for yr own personal take it or leave it factors.
::: Warts: Distant, bass heavy at start, bit o' hum, but overall pretty damn steady. More notes below.
::: Should UPGRADE most circulating copies & is a known gen. Seemingly last on DIME in 2006 as unknown gen but I don't have that one to compare to.
::: Steve Miller Band played 2 nights with different bands on the bill each night. August 3: Jeff Beck Group/Blue Cheer/Steve Miller Band/Big Mama Thornton & the original Hound Dog Band/Charles Lloyd. August 4, 1968: Butterfield Blues Band/Ike & Tina Turner/Electric Flag/Magic Sam/Steve Miller Band/Kaleidoscope.

Recording Information ::: unknown mono reel-to-reel recorder & microphone -> master mono audience reel tape -> 1st generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette, Dolby B on.

Playback 2011-07-30 ::: 1st generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette on Nakamichi BX-300 cassette deck, Dolby B on, azimuth & pitch adjusted, heads cleaned & demagnatized -> Tascam CD-RW900SL professional CD recorder -> CD-RW, no track splits -> computer -> EAC secure mode (logs made) -> wav file(s) -> Audacity (normalisation to remove DC offset, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch / dropout / bump / pop / click / dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, NO equalisation) -> CD Wave (track splits) -> Trader's Little Helper -> yer ears. First uploaded week of 2013-02-16.

NOTE : Twas HARD not to EQ this but I managed not to do it. Someone with real EQ know-how could presumably do some magic to this like knock out low end hum which is not problematic during the music (you hear it inbetween songs) but I imagine things would be clearer without it. Also a fairly inaudible electric current cyclical noise (heard at slow speeds) might be able to be reduced. Plus the usual EQ wizardry & likely things would improve even more, though it'll always be distant.

1st 7 minutes bass boomy, then settles down except for seconds here & there ("You're So Fine"). Some hum but not audible except between songs. Some distortion in 1st 2&1/2 minutes of "Your Old Lady", then calms down but after 10 minutes on my copy the volume dropped WAY down & had to be manually corrected & the distortion returns somewhat with some volume fluctuation & occasional noise, so I suspect battery power (mike or deck) might have played a part. Original tape flip presumably between trax 8&9.

Line-up ::: Steve Miller - electric guitar, harmonica, vocals // Boz Scaggs - electric guitar, vocals // Jim Peterman - keyboards, vocals(?) // Lonnie Turner - electric bass, vocals // Tim Davis - drums.

Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline.

CoolSonics 218 ::: Thanks to the original taper & trader! ::: Corrections welcome ::: This is a rare animal - a '68 audience tape of the 5 man Steve Miller Band with Boz Scaggs. While distant, it great that the taper was very steady here, no mike motion, & knob twiddling practically non-existent 'til the last tune (which may have been more technical problems). Also very cool that most dropouts & dullspots were easily repaired so the listen is very uninterrupted. This show kicks ass musically - very hip. Vocal harmonies are first class. During the heavy stuff the bass sounds like a freakin' jet takin' off (about 5 minutes into "Living In The USA") & the rhythm section is smokin'. This must see them in the midst of recording "Sailor". There's some 19 minutes of "Your Old Lady" & Boz singing "I Shall Be Released" is fairly epic & reminiscent of the band & there are many other outstanding moments, I do love them "Steppin' Stones"...

Kudos to Zongo for life support, Lochner for mikes&more & Fast Freddie for runnin' Video Dick's Record Emporium with the bathroom office full of tape decks. Thanks to Hanwaker (few among us can keep his pace). Mountains of gratitude to Davmar, D.White, Sanchez, Elliot, The Florida Kid, Kloiber, Zingg, JTW, Bershaw, Boston Gold, Dixon, Moore, Gough & SO many more for all that collecting & sharing... Royal thanks to The Man In The Palace, Doc Tinker, Brinkhoffs, Barely Eatin', Reel Master Gaule, Parrish & all the traders who housed me thru my music acquisition & travel years. Hats off to Brother Kent, Uncle Jake, Little Queenie (& her neighbor Frank) & his honor Ptomaine Thomas. Glasses raised to Byron for musical horizon expansion & much obliged to J & Thurston for keepin' my concert fires burnin' since my continental shift. Thanks to the Mods for keepin' DIME alive. Enjoy, share, give, spread peace. Yers truly, Knees
