THE PETER TORK ACETATES
?--> CDR --> CDR --> WAV (EAC)
I got this in a CDR trade with a person who I did much trading with circa 2000-2002. Written on the CDR is "THE MONKEES / Peter Tork Acetates / (from orig. vinyl)". I don't know what "original vinyl" means, as I've never come across an LP with this title, nor am I sure all of these are even from the same LP. I don't even know if these are all of the available acetates. But until an upgrade happens for this material, here's what I have, and have to say about some of it....
"Alvin" appears to be the same version presented three times, each one being scratchier than the next. The first time is the only one with the false start, while the third is slightly off-speed from the rest. The BB&M Rhino Handmade set has the best copy of this take (with false start).
"Can You Dig It" appears to be the same rough mix, but with one slightly off-speed from the other. One track has a warmer sound, while the other is more scratchy and shrill. Otherwise, I can't hear a difference between the two.
"Long Title" (tracks 11 & 12), meanwhile, has no speed differences between the two rough mixes. As with Can You Dig It, one is warmer, one is more shrill and scrathcy. They sync up together perfectly, with no noticeable vocal or instrumental differences between the two.
"My Community" is not the Monkees (and is presumably a demo for the version Tiny Tim released), but it somehow ended up amongst these other recordings.
Excluding the Bill Atkins demos, most of this material has since appeared in better quality on the official Rhino Handmade sets of the past several years, scattered about the Yellow Balloon "Deluxe" sets of the early 2000's, or elsewhere. Nonetheless, here's an idea of what was out there in the trading circles ten years ago.
