Notes

Never Even Thought was Colin Blunstone's fifth solo LP, but only the fourth to be released in America. For reasons unknown, the previous record, Planes, had only been released in Britain and Europe. Planes had been the first of three albums Colin recorded for Elton John's Rocket Records label. For Blunstone's second Rocket effort, Elton sent the singer to Los Angeles, where he was paired with producer Bill Schnee for this enjoyable, polished set of songs. Again, most of the songs were Blunstone originals, an exception being the Murray Head-penned title cut. Despite the presence of such chart-friendly tracks as "Photograph," Never Even Thought failed to spawn a hit single. (Colin's follow-up album, Late Nights In Soho, was not released in the United States.) This is pleasant, polished late-'70s pop/rock, but, as always, Blunstone's beautiful vocals elevate the material to a higher level. It's not his best work by any means, but preferable to much of what was being offered at the time. Blessed with one of the greatest voices in pop history, the challenge for Blunstone has always been finding material that matches the quality of his vocals.
