Comments:

1 - HELP!! If you have any uncirculated SPIRIT shows, or better quality FM
broadcasts than what's been posted here before, please share them. If you
know anybody who has shows that fit this category that aren't on DIME, please
dub off their stuff and share it. I'm trying to write a book on SPIRIT and need
all the information I can get. I have a database of over 1500 gigs 1967-1996, and
want to find as much information as I can to add to it. If you have any memories
of where you saw SPIRIT, the more specific the better (venue, city, date, supporting
bands, etc.), I'd love to know that as well. Please leave that in the comments
section or PM me. Thank you!

2 - Show description & comments follow:
While there were five different line-ups of SPIRIT in 1971, from the original group to
the "Feedback" unit, only three recordings from that year have ever surfaced. This is
the rarest of the three. The best sound quality is from the June 11, 1971 Seattle
broadcast, which has been reposted at Torrent # 392543. The other is the May 21, 1971
show from Santa Monica, which will be up shortly, if it isn't already.

The set list on all of these three shows are very unusual, and most were likely never
recorded by the band. Even though Jay Ferguson and Mark Andes had left the band,
and there was a new album to promote (the classic "Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus"),
Randy chose to only play one song from that album, and very little classic SPIRIT material.
The set list was mostly comprised of new songs with a "downer" theme, and the exact
titles of most songs may never be known. Long ago I sent recordings of these songs to
Randy and all he would confirm was that "Going Away" and "Tow The Line" were legit titles.
Randy wasn't the easiest guy to get information from, especially from the distant past.
The confusing part is that Randy wrote a song called "Go Away" in late 1968, that was
never released, and a song copywrited in mid-1974 entitled "Goin' Away". Whether one
of these is the same as the "Going Away" here is unknown. This song has no relation to
"Don't Go Away" on the "Son Of Spirit" album. There is an interesting lyric at the end of
"Foxy Lady" that I don't recognize. Anybody got any idea as to what is said?

It was a painful period for him, with the breakup of the original band, the death of his
pal Jimi Hendrix, and his marriage was on the rocks. Add in the fact that I personally think
all was not right from his skull fracture, sustained from a horse riding accident. No wonder
after this period Randy would sing "been on a downer too long" on the opening song of
the KAPT. KOPTER album.

As to this recording, it's a pretty clear recording, but lacking much high end. I recommend
rolling off some bass (which is not distorted and overloading the recording), and you'll enjoy
it more. I hope some more recordings from this period will surface. Enjoy!
