::: Quite enjoyable AUD for hall size & vintage. Check samples for fussy ingestion parameters or brief blasts of sublime bliss.
::: Warts: Surely missed some dullspots/dropouts but fixed many of them. Bit of the ol' hiss. Some clapping tho' much was reduced.
::: Opening act was Yes. Unlikely this taper did the deed but I'll ask him someday.
::: Sold out concert & this is the complete show. Janis' manager said she, "had the staid Brits dancing in the aisles".
::: A previously DIME'd, lesser quality, unknown generation version was downloaded a 1000+ times afore exitin' the tracker in 2010.
::: Comparison clause: Unknown gens traded online in 2 forms, one a poor, highly processed PR remaster. Here's a known 1st gen from taper & significant sonic upgrade.
::: Be wonderful if a knowledgeable person wants to do a proper EQ job on this.
Recording Information ::: Uher portable mono reel to reel tape recorder, external microphone (unknown brand) -> master 5" mono reel to reel audience tape (tape speed unknown) -> 1st generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette, Dolby B on (mid to late 80s transfer).
Playback 2013-11-xx ::: 1st generation Maxell XLII-90 cassette on Nakamichi 680ZX cassette deck, Dolby B on, azimuth & speed adjusted (pitched!) for individual recording, heads cleaned & demagnetized -> Sony Linear PCM Recorder PCM-M10 (LPCM 48kHz/24bit WAV files) -> computer -> Audacity (normalisation to remove DC offset, channel/phase alignment, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch / dropout / bump / pop / click / dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, NO equalisation), dithered down to 44.10kHz/16bit for CD-R burning -> CD Wave (track splits) -> flacs (Trader's Little Helper) -> yr ears. First uploaded week of 2013-12-07.
More mastering notes ::: Lowered and/or removed a lot of clapping (including many in-song claps near the taper), audience noise, dropouts, dullspots, etc. Tape was in pretty damn good shape overall, with a relatively low number of dullspots & dropouts. About 20 seconds of misc. claps completely removed after #1 - too many, too loud, too close to the mike & after other songs I just worked like a dog to reduce clap impact. Some low level clicks generally below the audio radar unless the recording is slowed down - presumably an artifact of the recording equipment. Was fairly close with the pitch in analog so decided not to pursue further digital speed correction as it changes ever so slightly thru the tape & I was reluctant to do multiple pitch changes. It should be more than fine for most ears.

Further line-up notes ::: Only 1 organ player in Europe videos on this tour. Many lists show Roy Markowitz OR Lonnie Castille on drums, but Roy left the band soon AFTER the Europe tour (and was replaced by Lonnie Castille). Elliot Mazer hired Roy to overdub his own drum parts on 3 Frankfurt trax used in the "Janis" movie OST album. *Frankfurt film credits Terry Hensley on trumpet but I believe it's Luis Gasca. Should I be mistaken, I'd be mighty pleased to be corrected. "Snookie" Flowers is also found as "Snooky" and "Snookey"...
Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline. Some songs from the tour were released in the 'Janis' documentary, but neither the movie nor soundtrack contains material from London.
CoolSonics 285 ::: Thanks to the original taper & trader, The Man In The Palace! ::: Corrections welcome ::: Purported by some to be 'one of the great' Janis concerts, tho' given we've still relatively few to compare it to of this vintage it seems, perhaps, an undocumented claim. HOWEVER... clearly a WONDERFUL performance & perhaps all the better for being able to hear the audience at times, as they transition from spellbound to obviously enthused thruout. The 'great' claim likely comes from the "Rare Pearls" CD interview recorded directly as Janis leaves the stage after this gig as she's ecstatic about it. You listen, you judge for yourself, but I think it's fantastic - tho' honestly I'm a Big Brother man at heart. But no matter what your fave Janis flavour & whether you prefer a cone or a cup, this is a pure gold scoop by most any standard, as long as you can savour some delicious 45 year old audience. ENJOY!
