DAVY JONES & MICKY DOLENZ
with THE MERMAID THEATRE COMPANY
in
HARRY NILSSON'S "THE POINT"
ORIGINAL CAST RECORDING
RMW 545

Released in 1977, The Mermaid Theatre's production of Harry Nilsson's "The Point" features Micky Dolenz & Davy Jones of The Monkees reprising their performances from the 1977 London stage show. While the play made use of The Point's plot and characters, it wasn't strictly a remake of the original. Rather, the show and LP incorporated various other Harry songs from Aerial Ballet, The Point, Nilsson Schmilsson, Duit On Mon Dei, Sandman & Knnillssonn, no doubt to expand the show for the stage. Some of what you'll hear on this cast recording is just what you might expect from a stage play/repertory ensemble; lots of company background singers, and arrangements sometimes more akin to showy muzak than Harry's original 1971 release. Though other lead singers are also involved, Micky and Davy are recognizable as the twin leads. Within a week of working together on this play, the two were no longer on speaking terms. At two weeks, they had a fistfight backstage, and after the play's run ended, they didn't speak to one another for nine years.

The show's musical director, Michael McNaught, is best known to fans as one of Harry's last arrangers (1977's Knnillssonn). Though long out of print, this music was briefly released on CD (on MCA), and again with a new cover geared towards Monkees' fans. The show itself was originally staged at the Boston Repertory Theatre in 1975 and later, with Harry's blessing, at the Chapel Court Theatre in Hollywood in 1991.

It is presented here taken from mint vinyl, with two bonus tracks.
