Liner Notes:
All tracks have channels time-aligned, speed corrected so that the line hum sits right at 50Hz (which also matches the speed of the released versions), and dropouts repaired. In the case of mono tracks, at any given time, the channel with the max level was used, no mixing of channels was ever performed. No crossfades were ever used, edits occur at points where the sample values and slopes were identical between the pieces to be joined. Edit pieces have been precisely matched in frequency response. No noise reduction of any kind was used. Amplitude was corrected as needed. Tracks were converted to 32 bits prior to processing, with .5 bits of triangular noise shaped dither applied during the conversion back to 16 bits.
01 Besame Mucho (non-looped ending) (Anthology + DarthDisc/Helter Skelter Records)
This is the Anthology version, dirtied and muddied up a bit (the version on Anthology was way too bright anyway) to match the original ending from the Darthdisc/Helter Skelter Records release which has been tacked on to the end. Thank you so much guys!
02 Love Me Do (Anthology)
03 How Do You Do It (Ultra Rare Tracks)
This is the non-sessions mix. Several releases from various bootlegs were auditioned, this was the least affected by far. The sessions version is not included in this set, as the edit at the end was completely unnecessary.
04 Please Please Me (Anthology)
05 Please Please Me (Take 16, edit pieces from takes 17, 18) (USB drive + Mono Box)
The released stereo version of this track was created by (unsuccessfully) syncing the mono version to a different take during the harmonica parts. Here, the harmonica parts have been re-synced.
06 Ask Me Why (single mix) (Dr. Ebbetts Sound System)
This mix has much less reverb than the album mix, so is presented here as it is closer to the original recording.
07-13 There's A Place (Takes 1-10) (Studio 2 Sessions at Abbey Road)
All from the same, unbroken reel. A real treat. Thanks Roger Scott!
14-18 I Saw Her Standing There (Takes 1-9) (Abbey Road Video Show + Studio 2 Sessions at Abbey Road + Free as a Bird CD single)
Take announcement for Take 1 was taken from the Abbey Road Video Show. Precise speed and placement was determined by matching it to the monitor mix (after speed correction), which has an even slightly longer intro, but not included here as it is not an in-line source.
Take 9 from the Free as a Bird CD single is slightly longer, and pasted onto the very end.
19-20 Do You Want To Know A Secret (Take 7-8) (Studio 2 Sessions at Abbey Road + Studio 2 Sessions at Abbey Road)
Take 7 intro was incomplete, and pretty mangled. Since these were vocal overdubs, and since the overdubs don't happen until later in on take 8, the take 8 intro was pasted on to the take 7 intro, creating a perfect complete take 7.
21 A Taste Of Honey (Take 6) (Studio 2 Sessions at Abbey Road + Mono Box)
Both take 6 and take 7 were incomplete as presented on the bootlegs, ending abruptly before the fadeout was complete. As these were vocal overdub takes, the released version was tacked onto the very end of both, recreating the complete takes. These two tracks were the reason I decided to create this set. On my original remaster of the tracks in this set, I had used some very mild noise reduction, which I thought was responsible for the pumping heard in both takes of A Taste Of Honey. It turns out that even the original bootlegs also pumped, as someone had added a large amount of expansion as a means of reducing the noise. The expansion has now been undone, so tracks are now noisier, but the same amount of noise as the rest of the set.
22 A Taste Of Honey (Take 6) (Studio 2 Sessions at Abbey Road + Mono Box)
Same as above.
23-30 There's A Place (Takes 11-13), I Saw Her Standing There (Takes 10-12), Misery (Takes 1-8) (Studio 2 Sessions at Abbey Road)
Another Unbroken reel.
Well, that's it. If it's not here, it's for one of the following reasons: The most original version is on a released album, it isn't an in-line source, it is another mix with edits, added reverb, minor volume differences etc., it wasn't recorded in the studio, or just hasn't seen the light of day yet.
Go out and buy the remasters. The mono box is very nearly perfect. The stereo discs are really good, and were mastered as well as today's market would allow.
Seek out RMW, HSR and Hob's stuff. They are all doing a great job.
Don't forget Purple Chic for showing us the way.
Thank the good Doctor Ebbetts for providing us stuff that still only exists on vinyl.
If there is something missing here, please let me know.
And if you have anything to contribute, please consider sharing.
These take a long time for me, as my day job is the same type of work, I don’t usually feel like doing the same thing in my free time. But, the Beatles are much too important to me to not do these at all. I hope you enjoy the results as much as I do. So, see you next year for the next volume of this series.
Thanks,
