The Beatles - 1990s B-Sides
This is a collection of B-Sides, originally released in 1995 and 1996, which were not included in the Live At The BBC (Volumes 1 and 2) or Anthology (1, 2 and 3) albums.
1 - I Saw Her Standing There
(John Lennon and Paul McCartney)
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 11 February 1963
Producer: George Martin
Engineer: Norman Smith
Remix Engineer: Geoff Emerick
The 1963 master of I Saw Her Standing There was take 1, with Paul's energetic "1-2-3-4" count-in from take 9 tacked on the front. Issued here for the first time is the *full* take 9.
2 - Devil In Her Heart
(Drapkin)
From the BBC Radio Programme POP GO THE BEATLES
Transmitted: 20 August 1963
Recorded: BBC Paris Theatre, London, 16 July 1963
Producer: Terry Henebery
The marathon BBC session of 16 July 1963 - eighteen songs for three programmes - gave us an opportunity to try out this song by girl group The Donays and two days later the EMI version was taped for the second album 'With The Beatles'
4 - Baby's In Black
(John Lennon and Paul McCartney)
Recorded: Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles, 29, 30 August 1965
Producer: Voyle Gilmore
Final Mix Producer: George Martin
Remix Engineer: Geoff Emerick
Recorded By Capitol when the Beatles gave two concerts at the Hollywood Bowl in August 1965 (the introduction is from the first night, the music from the second), this previously unissued live performance of Baby's in Black affords an excellent insight into the music and excitement of Beatlemania.
5 - Yellow Submarine
(John Lennon and Paul McCartney)
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 27 May and 1 June 1966
Producer: George Martin
Engineer/Remix Engineer: Geoff Emerick
This new mix of the Yellow Submarine master emphasises its many and varied sound effects and features, unmissably, a novel introduction to the song, spoken by Ringo over marching sound effects, that has remained unheard until now.
6 - Here There and Everywhere
(John Lennon and Paul McCartney)
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 16 June 1966
Producer: George Martin
Engineer/Remix Engineer: Geoff Emerick
As released on Revolver, Here There And Everywhere was a lavish blend of Paul's lead vocal, combined Beatle harmonies and elegant instrumentation. Issued here for the first time is a combination of Take 7 (the basic track with Paul's simple but effective guide vocal) and - superimposed near the end - a 1995 remix of those harmonies, as overdubbed on to take 13.
7 - Christmas Time (Is Here Again)
(John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr)
Recorded: EMI Studios, London, 17 November 1967 (music) 6 December 1966(greetings)
Producer: George Martin
Engineer/Remix Engineer: Geoff Emerick
From 1963 to 1969 the Beatles gave members fo their official fan club a special gift at Christmas: a record unavaliable elsewhere. The 1967 disc was titled Christmas Time Is Here Again and extracts from a song of that name were scattered among the sketches. Issued here for the first time is an uninterrupeted recording of the number. Superimposed near the end are some spoken-word seasonal greetings, taped in 1966, followed by a John Lennon pastiche.
