King Crimson "Earthbound In Santa Monica" Santa Monica Civic Auditorium 1972-03-19 Master AUD reel-to-reel (first time in circulation, mp3 sample) Great show and performance!

I am willing to make a bet here that you will find this to be one of the most interesting KC shows you have ever heard. It's also mostly complete (I think).

Not only are the band writhing in the throes of impending (although, as it turned out temporary) dissolution, they are still managing to plunge even deeper into their souls than on the "Earthbound" album. The result is strikingly one-of-a-kind. I am still puzzling over the setlist. It doesn't match the surrounding nights up for sale on the DGMLIVE website. You may notice that I don't have a title for the last track. That, in fact is just the beginning of title-naming issues regarding this show. If I have done anything wrong here, please supply title corrections!

I also had another, quite different dilemma this time around. It was sort of a balancing act: Give this show to DGM, or give it to you. Give it to them, give it to you, give it to them, give it to you... You won out, and I'll tell you why. I was (am) concerned that if I give it to them, it will disappear without a trace if the band don't like the performance or recording, and that I will have no more ownership regarding same. If I give it to you, they can still hear it (if they are listening in here, that is). If they like it, they can still have it. All they have to do is ask. This time period is under-represented on their website anyway.

Regarding the issue of presentation: I do think this show may require some small EQ tinkering, but aside from some digital speed correction on the first 40 minutes, no other manipulation was performed. This show was found in three pieces on two reels and a cassette copy, and spliced together from the best sounding pieces. Aside from a small drum section of "Groon" that's missing, the only other cut is at the very end of "21st Century Schizoid Man". Since the reel also ends here, any other possible missing material between this and the encore is a matter of conjecture. If you follow the setlists for surrounding shows, there isn't any missing material. But, as I have said, the setlist on this night does not match the surrounding shows.
