"Live in OZ" (2001) - This Canned Heat CD, "Live in OZ: Featuring Walter Trout" (published by Mystic Records), was originally recorded as "Boogie Assault: Live In Australia" in 1981. After the untimely death of vocalist and harp-player Bob Hite in April 1981, Canned Heat was reassembled for it's 1981 debut in Australia. In addition to Adolpho "Fito" de la Parra (drums), the new lineup included Mike "The Mouth" Halbey (guitar/vocals), Paul "Ernie" Rodriguez (bass/vocals), Rick "Cherry Red" Kellogg (harmonica/vocals), and Walter Trout (lead guitar/vocals). "Live in OZ" contains a good cross-section of Canned Heat material, including the singles "On The Road Again", "Goin' Up The Country", and "Let's Work Together". Other songs included are "Amphetamine Annie", "Kings Of The Boogie", "Refried Hockey Boogie" (nearly 23 minutes long, and featuring solos from everyone, including Trout's homage to Australia's "Waltzing Matilda"), the bluesy "Hell's On Down The Line", "Chicken Shack Boogie", and the ultra-bluesy "So Long". The entire band cooks in grand "Heat" fashion, and "Live in OZ" is a testament that this version of Canned Heat could boogie with the best of them...and it is inconceivable that Canned Heat could have found a better guitarist than Walter Trout, whose fiery lead guitar work throughout is simply stunning. "Hats-off" to Mystic Records for making this classic 1981 Canned Heat concert available.
