Notes

Originally formed as the Dominettes in 1962 by vocalist Steve Gibbons, The Uglys were a quintet that started out as a beat band and developed into a psychedelic outfit near their end of their history. It took them three years to get signed to Pye Records, making their debut with "Wake Up My Mind" b/w "Ugly Blues" in 1965. Neither it nor the group's two follow-ups attracted enough sales to chart. Their fourth single, "End Of the Season," was a Ray Davies composition, thus giving them a place as a footnote in the history of The Kinks, but not enough sales to keep them on Pye. The group jumped to British CBS for one single, and began an abortive relationship in 1969 with British MGM for one single, "I See The Light," that was unreleased at the time but later surfaced on a psychedelic anthology called The Perfumed Garden II. In 1969, the Uglys in their final line-up (including ex-Lemon Tree drummer Keith Smart), transformed themselves into Balls, which had a harder sound but not much more success. The group's most well known alumni, apart from Gibbons, are bassist Dave Pegg, who later became a core member of Fairport Convention, and keyboard player Richard Tandy, who went on to a long and prominent career with the Electric Light Orchestra.
