U-SPACES: Psychedelic Archaeology
Volume 4
(Click on track to hear : 128Kb/s audio stream)

1. Sound Vendor - Mr. Sun
(3:08) Liquid Stereo LS-25 (1967)
An amazing psychedelic track from a Portland Oregon outfit, the B-Side is "In
Paradise." Tasty wah-wah guitar in the choruses, definitely a lost classic. Two
minutes of verse & chorus and a full minute of feedback! Hard to believe this
one is still uncomped.
------------------------------------
2. Lynx - Look At Me
(3:26) Hare Ha 711 (1971)
B-Side is "Follow the Rain." From Tyler Texas. Another Lynx cut, "Just a
Friend," is on U-SPACES: Psychedelic Archaeology Volume 2.
------------------------------------
3. The Collectors - Ring The Bells
(3:22) Unreleased 67/68
These 2 songs are part of 30 minute set recorded for a Canadian TV program
called "Lets Go." Not much is known about the sessions for these recordings. See
HERE for more details. Please send e-mail to [velvetfogg@aol.com] if you know
anything about these recordings.
4. Collectors - Uncle Wiggley
(2:25) Unreleased 67/68 (as above)
------------------------------------
5. Accents - Friendly Stranger
(2:24) Gazzari 90391 (1969)
Although recorded on a Hollywood label, not confirmed whether this is the
Accents from San Diego, CA or not. B-Side is "People Are Funny." A great upbeat
psych number albeit a somewhat morbid song topic. One of the few stereo
recordings featured in the U-SPACES series.
------------------------------------
6. Beautiful - Shadows In The Sun
(2:49) Cyclops CS-71X (1969)
B-Side is "Walter's Dream." The single was produced by Kim Fowley. B-Side
appears on the Kim Fowley "Underground Animal" comp. "Shadows" features
seriously a seriously psychotic vocal delivery and ends with a frenzied
multi-instrumental crescendo. Apparently this is an almost identical version of
Soft Machine's first single "Feelin Reelin' Squealin' " (also produced by Kim
Fowley) with extra vocal growls added.
------------------------------------
7. Sixth Day Creation - Cherry Pie
(2:27) Laurie LR 34-83 (1969)
B-Side is "You're Better By Far." A nicely written, EXTREMELY catchy psych/pop
number. Not much else is known about the band.
------------------------------------
8. Velvet Haze - Last Day On Earth
(2:28) Wilson 2 (1966?)
B-Side is "Bad Woman." Possibly from Virginia or Nebraska, band is still
somewhat of a mystery. An all-out punk blitz ,"Last Day" has it all for garage
aficionados, including fumbly fingered fuzz leads and that all-important teen
angst! Recording date assumed to be 1966.
------------------------------------
9. Act Of Creation - Yesterday Noontime
(1:59) Capitol 5973 (1967)
A Plymouth, Rhode Island band, The A-Side is "I've Just Seen You" and is on this
compilation also. "Noontime" is a short but catchy pop/psych number with some
backward guitar riffs.
------------------------------------
10. East River Drive - Hard Way To Go
(2:26) Mainstream MRC 723 (1969)
A-Side is "Dirty Woman." Location unknown. Some nice guitar work on this one
------------------------------------
11. Enemys - Mo-Jo Woman
(2:21) MGM 13573 (1966)
Suspected to be same band that appeared in film "Riot on Sunset Strip,"
featuring two 3 Dog Night members. Mo-Jo Woman was originally on a 1970 MGM
compilation LP (Core of Rock MGM-SE-4669) and is a serious garage punk blitz.
B-Side is "My Dues Have Been Paid."
------------------------------------
12. Aluminum Dream - Strangers Calling
(3:06) Unreleased Acetate (1968)
This was Timothy Leary's house band at Millbrook, and they ventured into
Apostolic Studios in NYC in 1968 and recorded a song. Nothing was ever done with
it and all that was produced was an acetate, from which this version was dubbed.
See HERE for more details.
------------------------------------
13. Benjamin Carry Ltd. - Old Man
(2:02) Viva 277 (1968)
Very nice folk/psych piece with a great orchestral production. A-Side is "Catch
the Rain." This was probably an LA band.
------------------------------------
14. Medicine Mike - I've Never Been So High
(2:49) Evolution 1011 (68/69?)
A not-so-subtle psych tune with lots of drippy wah-wah. B-Side is "Night on
Fire." Another strange omission on previous psych comps.
------------------------------------
15. Merlin - Dirty Woman
(2:19) 123 1730 (1970)
B-Side is "Telephone." Possibly from Texas. A tasty psych/funk piece with some
very raucous guitar leads and organ playing.
------------------------------------
16. Rose Garden - Here's Today
(2:25) Atco 6564 (1968)
Recorded after their 1968 LP release, this single failed to chart and group
subsequently broke up. Sounds like it could have fit on any Byrds LP circa
65/66, so it looks like they missed the window of opportunity for this style.
The B-Side is "If My World Falls Through."
------------------------------------
17. Sagittarius - Virgo
(2:25) Columbia 44289 (1967)
A-Side is "Hotel Indiscreet. " It's a mystery to me how this track could have
been left off any Sagittarius or Curt Boettcher compilations. A dreamy
instrumental, it's somewhat more psychedelic than the majority of the
Sagittarius output.
------------------------------------
18. Sawdust - Sunbeam
(2:56) EAB 1110 (1969)
From Lewiston, Maine. The 'A' side is "I Shall Try." Sunbeam is a feel-happy
country psych number with an exceptionally lengthy instrumental passage that
never quite kicks in. This is their only known single.
------------------------------------
19. Shane - Woman Don't You Go
(2:58) Top Cat 154 (1968)
Probably an LA band, B-Side is "Road Runner." Perhaps the most fuzz guitar leads
ever included in a 3 minute single!
------------------------------------
20. Turquoise - 53 Summer Street
(2:59) Decca F 12756 (1968)
B-Side is the classic Rubble number, "Tales of Flosse Fillet." Not really psych,
but a very catchy pop tune. Band was from the UK.
------------------------------------
21. The Cellar - Think About Now
(2:46) Monica 6591 (1969)
A-Side is "I Wonder." From Philadelphia. Some excellent San Francisco style
guitar work on this cut.
------------------------------------
22. The Raves - Mr. Man
(2:26) Smash 2088 (April 1967)
B-Side is "Mother Nature," which has appeared on other comps. Possibly from New
York - "Mr. Man" is a catchy pop/psych creation. All songs on their 45s were
composed by M. and D.Jimenez.
------------------------------------
23. Hugh McCracken - You Blow My Mind
(2:42) Congress CG-257 (1965)
B-Side is " Buzz In My Head." Hugh McCracken was a prolific session man from
Connecticut. Described as "brash folk-beat with brass," a garage style single
definitely way ahead of it's time.
------------------------------------
24. Act Of Creation - I've Just Seen You
(2:18) Capitol 5973 (1967)
A-Side is "Yesterday Noontime, which is also featured on this compilation.
------------------------------------
25. Chateaux - Reference Man Pt. 2
(6:43) Eye 1000 (1968)
Reference Man Part 1 (A-Side) is on other comps but Part 2 features slowed down
version of same song with extended guitarwork. Part 1 is reprised in it's
entirety at the mid-way point, making for a long piece. From Vermillion, South
Dakota, Tommy Bolin blasts on lead guitar.
