The four original Velvets chose to put decades-old differences aside and reunite for a series of European concerts. Recorded at L'Olympia Theatre in Paris over three nights, Live MCMXCIII is available as either a two-disc set containing the whole show, or as an abridged single-disc set. There's a real cutting edge to this concert recording that screams rejuvenation. The dour Velvets are actually having fun. Vocals are right up front in the mix — not a consistent advantage, as Reed sometimes comes unglued here. In a daring move, Cale takes effective vocal turns on "All Tomorrow's Parties" and "Femme Fatale." But it's the often overlooked Tucker and Morrison who construct a flawless percussive and rhythmic backbone that give the event its real cohesion and structure.
