Notes

From the ashes of King Crimson's mid-'90s double-trio lineup arose various "ProjeKcts" involving all six members — but not necessarily all at the same time. The concept suggests that future incarnations of the band would be informed by the organic method of live performance. Live in San Francisco: The Roar of P4 features the fourth mini-Crim (aka ProjeKct Four) at the 7th Note club in San Francisco. This aggregate contains sizable contributions from touch guitarist Trey Gunn and electronic and acoustic percussionist Pat Mastelotto. While bold musical textures are created by guitarist Robert Fripp — such as the eerie and dissonant intro of the leadoff track "Ghost" — lean and funky leads are split among the three-man rhythm section. Returning to his post as bassist and Chapman stick player is Tony Levin, with his familiar vibrations. Several of the musical themes and motifs coalescing here show up on subsequent King Crimson releases. The title track of The ConstruKction Of Light contains variations of melodies and structures by ProjeKct Four under the moniker(s) "Heavy ConstruKction" and "Light ConstruKction." Heavy ConstruKction is also a triple-disc compilation featuring performances from the Y2K European tour, including two readings of "Deception of the Thrush." The track as performed here by ProjeKct Four outlines the song's structure. By the time King Crimson performs it, the energies are altogether different. Not better or worse — just different. Live in San Francisco: The Roar of P4 includes a 24-page liner notes booklet with Pat Mastelotto's "Notes From the Drumseat" essay, rare photos, and the continuing Discipline Global Mobile diary entries by Fripp. This release is not available in retail outlets.
