RL Burnside & Warren Haynes
Bele Chere Festival, Asheville, NC USA
July 26th, 1997
A Doodee Music Master Recording
RL in a festival environment joined by Warren Haynes. The Mule headlined the 1997 festival in Warren's hometown and RL played right before they went on. This show definitely has a different vibe from my previous RL post. For lack of a better word, the Morehead Chop House show seemed much more "evil". It was a gruff affair, like a good filet mignon with a little satan on the side. Many songs at the Bele Chere show have more of a slower, Junior Kimbroughish "trance" feel to them, much of that due to Warren. Listen to the sample of "Goin' Down South" and you'll hear what I mean. I think Warren makes this one of the more different sounding RL shows you can find. Warren and Kenny get into some extended jams that you usually don't hear on RL recordings. RL must have been pleased. He turned it into a big family affair by introducing his grandson (Cedric), his adopted son (Kenny) and his other adopted son (Warren). Digging these out to post makes me realize how much I miss RL and how there's a real danger of this style of blues disappearing into the void. It also serves as a reminder of what a talented player Warren is. Enjoy.
