Notes

THE CROSSFIRES "Silver Bullet"

From the sax herald opening, you know it's gonna be the "William Tell Overture," and unlike other surf bands, this one is fronted by a pair of sax players, so... Chunky surf backtrack, and highly rhythmic. Fun.

THE CHALLENGERS "Satan's Theme"

Unremarkable progression, a bit of double picking, some edgie guitar, and not much else.
Rock Instrumental Stereo

THE PYRAMIDS "Penetration"

One of a handful of nationally successful surf single, this track has been covered more than "Miserlou," and in more varieties of rock styles. If you don't own this track, you have entered the surf idiom yet. This is one of the essential classics. The production is unusual and masterful, and the melody is simple and enduring. It spawned hundreds of covers, and is still quite infectious.
Surf Instrumental Mono

THE CORNELLS "Beachbound"

Opening with a whammy chord, this is a dry surf number, among the surfiest on the album. It's rhythm and riff orientation, accented by a wailin' sax break is prototypical surf single fare. A nice track. "Beachbound" was also released as "Ten Tons Of Wet" as by the Surf Riders on a Canadian label.
Surf Instrumental Stereo

THE REVELS "Intoxica"

This track sports the same sort of laughter and brew sounds that "Church Key" sports, but is less interesting. It's a fine tune, of course, but this is a pretty slow version, and relatively uninspired, though the sax if quite hot.
