Wrightfan and Warnakey present SMiLE!
“Side 1”
1. Our Prayer/Gee-The intro to the album. Our Prayer combined with the first part of Gee. A spiritual song followed by what serves as a little taste of H+V. It is likely that Brian wanted it as part of Heroes and Villains but since he since “I’m in Great Shape” and “I Ran” are not as finished as the other songs here, we made it to fit the 12 track plan that Capitol originally wanted. Lead vocal: group.
2. Heroes and Villains-The centerpiece to the album. This is the track that really gives the whole thing an Americana feel. Lead vocal: Brian and Mike (only for the cantina section.)
3. Old Master Painter/You are my Sunshine-Two American standards get a psychedelic feel to it. Lead vocal: Dennis.
4. Do You Like Worms?-One of the most psychedelic tracks on the album. Brian and Van envisioned it as a man flying on a magic bicycle from Plymouth, MA to Hawaii. Lead vocal: Brian and group.
5. Wonderful-An enigma of the song. Some speculate it to be a metaphor for sex but Van Dyke Parks has stated it doesn’t mean anything. Lead vocal: Brian.
6. Child is Father of the Man-Probably the most incomplete track from SMiLE. The instrumental track and vocals on the chorus are all that was done. We took Mok’s version and changed it around for a different arrangement (since it was tough for me to find the original source files for Child) Lead vocal: Group
7. Cabinessence-One of the most complete tracks from SMiLE not counting Good Vibrations. Really gives a nice rustic vibe of the American frontier. Lead vocal: Carl
“Side 2”
8. Good Vibrations-Only put on due to Capitol’s habit of insisting hit singles appear on LP’s. If Good Vibrations didn’t have to go on here, I’d move Child as the opener for side 2 and cave in to putting Look (I Ran) after it. It would come out to a nice and neat 6 songs on each side as well. Lead vocal: Carl
9. Wind Chimes-Much better then the Smiley Smile version (except for that version’s tag.) This one is matched to the BWPS arrangement except the end has no vocals (the original material makes it nearly impossible to do it right.) Lead vocal: Carl.
10. Vega-Tables-What originally started as the elements turned into a stand alone track. Gotta love the fact that actual vegetables are used as percussion. Arranged to resemble the BWPS version. Lead vocal: Al with Brian at the end.
11. The Elements-Comprised as a suite representing:
Fire: The “Heroes and Villains” intro merged with “Fire.”
Earth: I Wanna be Around/Workshop.
Air: A snippet from the end of Holidays (Air was meant to be a piano piece that is still lost to this day so Holidays will have to do.)
Water: I Love to Say Da-Da with the “Water Chant” following it. Lead vocal: Brian on Da-Da and group on the chant.
12. Surf’s Up-One of the most beautiful songs ever written. We took the Surf’s Up backing track, converted it into mono, and laid down Brian’s piano demo over it. One of the best versions of this you’ll ever hear! Lead vocal: Brian.
*Production notes*
We tried our hardest to make this version of SMiLE the best possible version for both casual listeners and audiophiles alike. We took a lot of care to make sure every song sounded crystal clear by today's standards while keeping the integrity of the original recordings intact. In certain cases it was not possible to isolate and remove some of the hiss and static from the original records (for example the "whispering winds" section of the Elements between 3:40 - 4:17. We still hope you will consider this the best sounding Smile fan mix to date.
